The Descendants of Leah Lane - North Carolina/Texas/Oklahoma

Leah Lane (1839-1926) was born in North Carolina. On Leah's death record, her father is listed as Bill LANE and her mother is listed as Ammie (Amy). According to oral hisory, Leah was married three times and had a total of 12 children for which only 8 survived. Her first husband may have been named Washington Wills as recorded on the death record of her oldest son, Jordan. In the 1870 census, Leah as head of household and is living in Dalmatia, Halifax County, NC under the surname WILLS with five sons: Jordan, Charles, Julius (later known as Junious), John and Goddin (Gordon). Her second husband may have been George Batchelor as it is recorded on the death record of her sixth child, George Batchelor (Bachelor). This son used the surname WELLS throughout his life. Leah's last marriage was to Washington Whitehead for which 6 daughters were born...Florence, Aggy, Fanny, Ann O. and Mary E., and Penninah (Penny). Florence and Penny were the only survivors. Leah and her family migrated from Halifax/Edgecombe Co., NC to Milam Co., TX around 1895/1896. After relocating to Texas, the surname spelling changed to WELLS. A few years later, some of the family migrated to Oklahoma Co., OK. Leah returned to NC (Whitakers) in May 1926 where she later died. She is buried in the PITTMAN family plot in Oklahoma City, OK (Trice Hill Cemetery).
