From Ron Partin, correspondent.
In December, 1630, Thomas Angell sailed on the ship "Lion" from Bristol to Boston as a servant or apprentice of Roger Williams. After 66 days at sea, they arrived in Boston, February 5, 1631. After two months in Boston, they lived in Salem (1631-1636). In 1636 Roger Williams was banned from the Colony. He was joined the following spring by five companions, including Thomas Angell, who had spent the winter with him at Seekonik. To escape religious persecution they settled Providence in 1636. On August 20, 1637, or shortly thereafter, Angell was one of the signers to form a town fellowship. Williams gave him a deed to a six acre house lot in 1638 (site of the current First Baptist Church and the old Normal School, and Angell Street). In March 1651/2 Thams signed the Oath of Allegiance: "I do declare and Promise That I will be true and faithful to the Commonwealth of England, as it is now Established, without a King of house of Lords." (Minor, 1948). He took an active role in the affairs of the settlement. Elected as commissioner to make laws in 1652 and 1653. In 1855, he was reported as a farmer and constable, holding the latter office for many years; was town clerk from 1658 to 1675, and was often appointed to places of trust and honor. He became a large land owner. His will was proven by the town council in 1694. Thomas Angell died in September of 1694, aged 76 years; widow Alice survived him three months" (Minor, 1948). Will dated, Providence, May 3, 1685, was preserved (Biog. Cyclo., 1881).
