THOMAS WELLMAN, OUR IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR
THOMAS WELLMAN was born about 1620, probably in Ilminster,
SOMERSET, ENGLAND, and immigrated to Lynn, Massachusetts sometime
between 1640 and 1650. He married ELIZABETH, whose family
surname is unknown, in 1642, as their first child, ABRAHAM, was
born in 1643. She died after 22 March 1672/73, the day that the
heirs of THOMAS signed their agreement. THOMAS died at Lynn End
(Lynnfield), Massachusetts on 10 October 1672.
Alonzo Lewis in his book, The History of Lynn, published in
1844, gave the Annals for 1640 which included a THOMAS WELLMAN
among a list of twenty-seven families that appeared in Lynn
"about this time." This agrees with the account of Bernard
Burke, that THOMAS was thought to have been from Ilminster,
SOMERSET, ENGLAND which he left ca. 1640 to come to America,
settling at Lynn, Massachusetts. Burke also lists THOMAS' birth
date as ca. 1620, and his death date as 10 Oct 1672.
An immigration date of 1640 seems too early, however, as
THOMAS was married to ELIZABETH, probably in ENGLAND, sometime in
1642. This is more than likely the same THOMAS WELLMAN mentioned
by John Farmer as, "Thomas, age unknown, arrived in Lynn, MA in
1650." If this date is correct, then all of his children with a
birth date before 1650 were born in ENGLAND and immigrated to
Massachusetts with him. James Savage simply states, "THOMAS,
Lynn 1640, d. 10 Oct. 1672." The date, 1640, is not indicated as
a birth date (it was not preceded by "b." as is Savage's usual
form). This only indicates that THOMAS was thought to have been
living at Lynn, ESSEX, Massachusetts about that time. However,
it is possible that since Savage used Farmer as a source for his
work, that he may have copied the date incorrectly, writing 1640
instead of 1650. Joshua Wyman Wellman also noted Savage's
comments about the 1640 date, but concluded that no original
records can be found from Lynn, Massachusetts showing that THOMAS
settled there prior to 1650. Of course, it is also possible that
both dates are only approximates. This would account for the
discrepancy and allow for a more logical arrival date sometime
after a 1642 marriage date of THOMAS and ELIZABETH in ENGLAND.
Any information would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have.
