Notes for Kenneth Ray Flack, Jr.: Kenneth Ray Flack, Jr. was helping his brother George Mills Flack to put out a forest fire and stepped on a live wire that was on the ground covered by leaves. ABSTRACT: BROTHERS ELECTROCUTED WHILE FIGHTING BLAZE Two teenage brothers were electrocuted from downed power lines while they were fighting a grass fire Saturday afternoon. The victims, Kenneth Ray Flack, Jr. 16, and George "Bud" Flack, 15, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth R. Flack of Green Hill Community, were called to fight a grass fire in the Oak Springs Church Community. The fire had broken out on the farm of Wilson Morris. Charles Chandler, his brother-in-law was first on the scene and began fighting the blaze which was sweeping a field of broom straw and kudzu. Chandler said the two boys and Ellis Patterson, 55, arrived on the scene later to fight the fire. He said they had the fire under control when they heard the younger Flack brother call that fire was spreading where the REA power lines were. Chandler said they were some distance away from the boys as the fire had spread over some six or seven acres. When they arrived on the scene, they found both boys dead. Patterson, arriving on the scene first, tried pulling one of the victims away from the flames, but received an electrical shock and discovered that the bodies were lying across the downed power line Chandler telephoned for help. Rescue Squad members and law enforcement officers answering the call recovered the bodies from the power line and extinguished the blaze. Coroner A. C. McKinney said an inquest would be held probably at 7 P. M. Tuesday. He said he was reasonably certain that death was caused by electrocution. Kenneth Flack was a sophomore at Central High School where his mother is dietitian. His brother, George Flack, was an eighth grader at Green Hill Elementary School. FUNERAL SERVICES: Funeral services for the brothers were held at 2 P. M. Monday at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to their parents are two sisters, Mrs. Yvonne Atchley of Littleton and Miss Roseanne Flack of the home. |
