Neelyville Killing

Sam Elder, a man between 65 and 70 years of age, was instantly killed Saturday by Frank Brown. on what is known as the Johnston place, one mile northwest of Neelyville. The trouble seems to have been the family affairs of Brown, and on this day a quarrel arose between the two while they were seated on a fence, and Brown struck Elder with his fist, knocking him off of the fence, the fall dislocating his neck, and causing instant death. Coroner Dr. J. Carter was sent for to hold an inquest, and The verdict was as above stated. The jury was composed of M.G. Ries, H.F. Kirkpatrick, E.Y. Jenkins, W.H. Tennant, E.R. Reed, J.W. Hall. Brown was brought up from Neelyville and placed in jail, His preliminary trial was to have come up yesterday before Esq. Ingram but he waived examination to await the action of the grand jury. He is about 35 years old and has a family. The dead man's home is in Eldorado, Ill., and he was just getting ready to visit his family, who lives at that place. He was an old soldier and drew a pension, and it has been his custom to go to Eldorado once every three months.

From THE PROSPECT NEWS -Doniphan, Mo. DATED: Thursday July 22, 1897

SAMUEL ELDER, who lived on a farm in Varner Township and a brother of W.J. Elder, who lives a couple of miles north of Doniphan, was killed by a blow from a club in the hands of a man named Jim Brown, at Brown's place of residence about a mile and a half below Neelyville, last Saturday afternoon about 2 O'clock. A woman was the cause of the trouble. Elder was forbidden Brown's house and tried to force his way in, when Brown struck him on the neck with a billet of wood and knocked him off the porch, killing him. Brown walked into Neelyville and surrended to Marshal Nance, and told of the trouble. On going out to Brown's house they found Elder's body lying on the floor where some of those who had gathered at the house had placed it. The coroner impannelled a jury and heard the testimony and the verdict was that Elder came to his death from a blow on the neck with a club in the hands of Brown. The examining trial was held yesterday and Brown was bound over. Elder was 53 years old. Brown's wife, who had been Elder's mistress, was the cause of the killing.

The above article typed per original from The Prospect News, by Vivian K. Elder-Matthews-Cook,
who has photo copy of this article from the newspaper. The day it was copied by Mrs. Cook, the
library copier was on the blink and copy turned out too dark to transmit.

Further remarks by Mrs. Vivian Cook are as follows:
#l Varner Township encompasses an area just North of Naylor, Mo. Running along County Road B from Hwy. 142 through to Fairdealing, Mo. located on Hwy. 160.

#2 Varner Township is used very little today. It is more commonly known as the Gum Cemetery area. Gum Cemetery is located about 3 miles North on county road B. Sits on the left
and is the burial place of many of the Elder family members.

#3. W. J. Elder mentioned above, was William Jackson Elder, brother to Samuel that was killed." Jack" as he was called, lived in a community known as Oak Grove. Oak Grove still exists and is located about 2 miles North of Doniphan, Mo. on Highway 21.

#4. Neelyville, Mo. is located to the East of Naylor about 6 miles, at the intersection of U.S. Highway #61-67 and State hwy. 142., in Butler County. Approximately 25 miles South of Poplar Bluff, Mo. and 12 miles North of the Missouri - Arkansas line.

#5. The Samuel Elder that was killed per the above article, was Vivian s Great-Grandfather, and husband of Nancy M. Murray. The age given in the article, was a definite miscalculation! This may have been what he told his mistress, Mrs. Brown, but the 1850 Census of Illinois.showed him to be 13 at that time, making him 60 years of age, which coincides with the Coroner's report. Vivian has been unable to establish an exact birthdate for him. Census records and other sources of info do not jive. Could have been born as early as 1834.

#6. Samuel's place of burial is not known to Vivian either. Have not been able to locate him in any of the Naylor area cemeteries too date. Vivian secured his Military Records of the Civil War, but they do not tell burial place either.
