Inducted into Co. E, 29th Regt Illinois Infantry Volunteers on 15 Aug 1861. Promoted to rank of Sgt about 1863. The 29th fought at Ft. Donelson, Shiloh, Holly Springs, Vicksburg, the Big Black, Natchez, Mobile Bay, and finally in Texas. Based on e-mail from Daniel A. Hester, 612 Ryderwood Dr., Paragould, AR 72450

Pvt Thomas Murphy, Co. E, 29th Illinois Infantry Regiment was a member of the eight companies of the 29th that were captured on 20 Dec 1862 at Holly Springs, MS during a cavalry raid by Confederate General Earl Van Dorn. The prisoners were paroled on their honor to Benton Barracks, MO until exchanged in Jul 1863. His parole of honor letter handwritten and held by Cynthia Frances Ingham states: "I the undersigned prisnor of War, Private Thomas Murphey, Co. E, 29 Regt, Ills. Vol. captured at Holly Springs, Miss. hereby give my parole of honor not bear armes against the Confederate. States. or to perform Military or garrison duty whatever until regularly by exchanged and further that I will no divulge any thing relative to the forces or condition of any of the forces of the Confederate. States. This 20th day of Dec. 1862 /s/ Thomas Murphey, Witness /s/ J A Cochran, 1st Lt Co F 1st Regt Tenn Cav"
