Samuel was a carpenter and wood worker. He married Lizzie Thaxton who died leaving a small child, Cynthia who was reared by her grandparents. She took advantage of every oppurtunity for an education and made a fine business woman.

Notes for MARGARET ROSABELLE GOSSETT:
According to her obituary Margaret Rosabelle Elder was born Oct 13, 1871 at
Gossett and died Jan 13, 1957. Cemetery records showed cause of death
ventricular fibrillation.

She had been in declining health for the past 2 years.

In addition to her children she left 2 bothers Milligan Gossett of Mutual,
OK and James Gossett of Alton: two sisters Mrs. W. A. Pullum of East Alton
and Mrs. Lena Dunnings of Tamms.

Her headstone reads Rosa B. 1872 - 1957 along with her husband William C.
1858 - 1936.



Mrs. M. Elder

Mrs. Margaret Rosabelle Elder, 81, widow of W. C. Elder, and a member of a well known Alton-Wood River area family died in her sleep early Sunday morning in St. Joseph’s Hospital where she had been a patient since last April. Her home was at 738 Ferguson Ave., Wood River.

She was the mother of Mrs. Herman (Irene) Meyer, Rosewood Heights; Mrs. Lila Serles, Wood River; Mrs. Arthur Dwight (Mary) Chaffee, Woodbury, Conn.; Thomas Gossett Elder, who is project manager for the Arthur G. McKee, Engineering Co. in Mexico, D. F.; and Frank Elder chief operator for the N. W. Kellogg Co. at Rio Dejanero, Brazil.

Mrs. Elder was born Oct. 13, 1871, at Gossett. Following her marriage to William Carroll Elder they moved to St. Louis, where they resided for few years and in 1903 they came to Upper Alton, where Mr. Elder was associated with a brother, O. M. Elder, in the carpenter-contracting business.

In 1919 they moved to Roxana when Mr. Elder became an employee of Shell Oil Co., and since 1920 she had resided in Wood River.

Mrs. Elder had been in declining health for the past two years, due to infirmities, but her mind had remained alert up until time of her death and she had enjoyed visits from her children at the hospital.

Her daughter, Mrs. Chaffee came to Wood River to spend Christmas with her and had remained in attendance at her bedside.

Surviving in addition to her children are two brothers, Milligan Gossett, Mutual, Okla. and James Gossett, Alton; two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Pullum, East Alton, and Mrs. Lena Dunnings, Tamms; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Elder was a member of First Baptist Church, Wood River, and pastor of the church the Rev. Walter Burk, will officiate at funeral rites Wednesday at 2 p.m., at the mortuary. Interment will be in Upper Alton Cemetery beside the grave of her husband. Friends may call at the mortuary from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday.
