I have been researching my family history for the past 50 years. The research has centered on the West family in North Georgia but has expanded to cover allied families in the past few years. My Georgia relatives relocated to Northeast Texas around 1900. Several other families from Gilmer county came to this same area of Texas when they heard of the level black land and the opportunity to improve their economic situations. They settled around the Celeste, TX area. Some of the families moving to Texas about the same time were West, Thompson, Evans, Compton, McClure, Teague, Jones and several others, most of whom are related. In 1948 I married Mary Ann Boyd, and she is a descendant of early Texas settlers, several of whom arrived prior to Texas Independence. The primary families in her ancestors are Boyd, Stiles, Ussery, Hardy, Bradley, Maxwell and Donovan. These families mostly settled in the Shelby County area of East Texas. Most of these ancestors were of Scots and Irish descent and initially were Presbyterians. Most of them moved on to Kaufman County, Texas in the Poetry community (Campground) near Terrell, Texas.
