Notes for JOHANNES LANG:
Johannes Lang was born in Zennern, Hesse, Germany on 10 June 1693. He married Anna Schnebele who was born in Alsace in 1706. Johannes's parents were Johannis Lang and Anna Elizabeth Korlen.
Johannes arrived in this country in 1722, settling in Lancaster county Pennsylvania. Shortly after he arrived his name was anglicized to John Long from Johannes Lang. In some records he was also called Hans.
John was baptized in the Reformed church in Germany, but he later became a Mennonite. His wife Anna's father and grandfather were also Mennonites.
In 1754, John built a barn that is still standing today in good condition and in use. This barn has become an historical landmark because it was at this barn that the famous Otterbein-Boem "Great Meeting" took place some time in the late 1760's. It was at this meeting that the Church of the United Brethren in Christ was organized. This barn has become known as the Isaac Long barn, as John's son Isaac was the one who owned the barn after John's death. John carved initials and the date 1754 on the lintel in one of the corners of the barn. There is a church in Neffsville PA named the Long Memorial United Methodist Church that a picture of the barn in the stained glass window. There are many members of that church today that are descendants of John Long.
Anna Schnebele is the daughter of Johann Jacob Schnebele. Her mother's name is not known. Johann was born in 1659, and came to America from Alsace Lorraine, in about 1714, and his name was angilicized to Snively or Snavely. The home that Johann built in Lancaster county PA, in 1728 is still standing and had been continuously inhabited by his descendants until just a few years ago.
Johann's father Jacob Schnebele was born in Zurich Switzerland in 1624.
