When Joseph was 60 years old he moved with his wife and five of his children to Washington county MD. He bought land from his father-in-law. Part of this land became known as "Long's Purchase". Joseph did not stay in Maryland very long. About 1795 he moved again to Huntingdon county PA. The area he move to became known as Germany Vally. This became a very important reference for researchers of this family. It was also from this document that showed that Joseph was very educated. His script was in good Gothic German Script - that of an educated man. Also Joseph willed his books to be divided among his children showing that the entire family were educated people.
