Notes for M
AJOR PASSONS:
Major Passons and his father enlisted October 4, 1813 at Fayatteville TN as privates in Captain William Russell's Company of Mounted Spies. They were mustered at Camp Coffee AL and served with General Andrew Jackson's army in the first Creek Campaign. They were engaged in almost every battle, including Tallushatchee, Talladega and Horseshoe Bend. They were discharged April 4, 1814 at Fort William in Alabama.
Major Passons again enlisted on September 28, 1814 at Winchester TN. He was a private in Captain John Cowan's Company. This group was a part of Coffee's Brigade of Tennessee Militia. Among Passons' comrades in Captain Cowan's company was Seargent David "Davy" Crockett, reknown backwoodsman and later a hero of the Alamo.
Passons was mustered in at Fayetteville. Because food was so scarce, Russell's Battalion marched on foot to Pensacola area where they joined the main army. Here Russell's Battalion was formed with other units into a regiment commanded by Colonel Uriah Blue.
With Blue's Regiment, Russell's Battalion participated in the battle of Pensacola on November 7. 1814. They were then probably dispatched to the relief of Fort Bowyer, and did serve in the expedition against the Red Stick Creeks along the Escambia River in December, 1814 and January, 1815. Later, they were sent to Fort Montgomery AL which was locatednear the junction of the Tombigbee and Alabama Rivers. Her, Passons was furloughed in January, 1815 and returned home.
For his service, Major Passons received a Tennessee grant of five acres in Jackson county, a Federal grant of 160 acres in Wisconsin and a pension of $8.00 per month.
