Notes for Ezekiel Taylor Ash:Muriel Lockhart's comments about her father Taylor Ash Dec. 5 1997."My dad always said his father had a half decent education and was going to teach him when my dad left school during the third reader. I would think that Jane Ash died about 1885. I believe my dad was 14 years old and as I told you before he left home after her death because he resented his older sister bossing him around. He would have been about 17 when he decided to go fishing and left Halifax when he was about 20 to sail around Cape Horn to Victoria. He stopped at Monterey, California for six months and fell in love with the city, almost took out his citizenship papers but then changed his mind and traveled on to Victoria to join the sealing fleet that was travelling to the Bering Sea between Alaska and Russia. That was in 1892. During one of their trips north their ships were seized by the Russians who claimed they had been sealing in Russian territory. They were sentenced to the salt mines in Siberia for six weeks, watched over by Russian Cossacks. They didn't think they would ever live through it. When it was proven they were innocent, the Russian government had to pay the American and Canadian Governments the amount of money that the sealers lost during their confinement. The men never did receive their money. He then was a shipper on the Yukon River during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. After that he was on the C. P. R. boats. In 1912 he went to Bonne Bay for a holiday to see his dad in Trout River and to visit old friends in Woody Pt., one of whom was George Allen. He met George's daughter, 24 year old Dulcie Allen, our mother, and married her on July 26, 1912. My dad had to return to Victoria to his job and our mother followed six weeks later never to return to Woody Pt. again. My dad was a lighthouse keeper on the Queen Charlotte Islands when Gordon was born April 11, 1914. He worked at Yarrows shipyards as a rigger when Gerry and I were born,Gerry on May 11, 1926 and me July 27, 1916. He remained with that job to his dying day."

More notes from Muriel ( Ash ) Lockhart Dec. 28, 1998: " I only wish I could remember more of the stories my dad would tell of his childhood. He always said he was born in Carbonear which makes me think that they (the parents) could have moved to Trout River when he was a very small child. My dad used to tell the story of the pranks he and brother Mose played. One in particular comes to mind. A neighbour lady used to call on them and as she would leave she would help herself to a choice piece of wood and my dad and Mose decided to fix her. They put some gun Powder in a choice piece of pitch wood close to the path so she would help herself to that particular one. When she put it in the stove the thing exploded and all the stove lids flew up in the air with soup flying everywhere. She rushed over to the Ash home in a state of rage but my dad and brother Moses had made themselves scarce. I guess that was the finish of her helping herself to the firewood. At the dinner table that night their father, Richard Ash, told the story with a straight face and wondered who could have played such a prank. I have picked my brains for scraps of information to help you. The name Alice comes to mind and I wonder if that was the name of Moses' wife. When my mother left Newfoundland after her marriage to my dad in 1912, she travelled alone from Woody Point to Port aux Basques and would have met his sister (Patience) who lived there. I have an idea that she met Moses' wife somewhere along the line but he was away at sea so she never met him. A branch of the Ash family lived at Sydney Mines, Cape Breton. Would that have been the William Ash family?
Muriel May 2001:---- I'm glad I listened to all the stories that my dad (Taylor Ash) would tell of "back home." He used to joke about the time he went fishing with King George the Fifth. Apparently King George the Fifth was a midshipman in the Royal Navy when he was a young lad and was on a ship stationed in Bonne Bay. It seems Bonne Bay was a training base for the Royal Navy in the early days. One particular day - George (who was Duke of something or other at the time) wanted to go fishing. Old Richard Ash had a boat that was loaned to the Royal party and my dad who was about 14years old was sent along with the group to show them where the good fishing spots were to be found. That was probably Trout River.
He didn't visit Nfld. again until 1912 and that was when he met my mother. He had a cousin Stephen Ash who came to B.C. who was killed on the west coast of Vancouver Island. I don't know who his father would have been.
