Claude Carrol West (b. February 16, 1897, d. May 28, 1975)
Claude Carrol West (son of Aurelious Henry West and Rachel Elizabeth Felkner) was born February 16, 1897 in Krum, Texas, and died May 28, 1975 in Huffman, Harris County, Texas. He married Sadie Anna McKiddie on October 13, 1923 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Notes for Claude Carrol West: Claude and Sadie worked at a number of professions to support their family. In Oklahoma, both he and Sadie worked for the railroad cleaning pullmans.
When their children were young, the family lived in the same house on Birdsall in Houston with Helen McKiddie Moore and her husband, Charlie Moore. Aunt Helen kept the children while the other adults worked. This is where the Claude West family met the McGraw family, who became lifelong friends. Joe McKiddie and his family lived across the street from the McGrawas at some point and the Wests lived upstairs at Joe McKiddies. The downstairs seemed to be a duplex with the Joe McKiddie family on one side and one of Charlotte McKiddie's daughters, Minnie, lived downstairs in the other part with her husband.
The family moved often and lived in Spring Branch when Jim went to high school. At that time, the 12th graders from Spring Branch went to Lamar High School in Houston, Texas, where Jim attended. The family then moved back to Cottage Grove Subdivision when Colleen was in high school.
In about 1946, the family moved to the Fayetteville, Arkansas area to Hazel Valley. Colleen didn't move with the family; she stayed in Houston and worked for the telephone company.
There was almost what could be called a family compound at Hazel Valley. Families who settled there at that time include the Houston West family, Charlie West family, and Charlie Moore family. They were all farmers and did other jobs to make ends meet.
Eventually, the Claude West family returned to Houston, Texas and settled in home on Mesquite in north Houston. Colleen and her family lived next door. Approx 1966, Claude and Sadie West moved back to Fayetteville, where they managed a small apartment complex owned by Lorene and John Maguire. After that they moved into a home next door to Charlie and Ollie West in Norman, Oklahoma. They lived for some period with Colleen and Garth Casper in the mid-70's in Norman, Oklahoma. Eventually, Colleen and Garth Casper returned to Huffman, Texas. Claude lived with them until his death; they moved to Cleveland, Texas where Sadie lived with them until her death.
In his lifetime, Claude West held a number of jobs, but Colleen West Casper remembers that he worked as a milkman for the old Phoenix Dairy in Houston, Texas on two different occasions. Once when there was horse and buggy home delivery and again after delivery vehicles were motorized. In later years, he was a painter and hung wallpaper and also sold Watkins Products.
