Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM2 TEALL (BENJAMIN1) was born in British Isles?, and died 1715 in Malden, Middlesex, Mass.. He married MARY COGGEN. She was born 1662 in England, and died 1745 in Malden, Middlesex, Mass..

Notes for W
ILLIAM TEALL:
The earliest record of a Teall(Teel) in America is an entry in the records of a town meeting in Malden, Massachusetts, held on November 4,1681 in which persons were selected to "cut and cart wood for Mr. Chevis". The list of "Cutters ye 4th day" included a Will Teale. The name William Teale appears several times in the town records of Malden, the last being a meeting held March 1, 1713/1714. The vital records of Malden show that five children were born to William and Mary Tealle. A six child, William, may have been born in the British Isles.

In a genealogy by John Marshall Raymond, " The First Teels in America", the family lore is that the Teels were Orangemen from Northern Ireland. There are no records prior to the town meeting that indicate a further descendant. In the absence of further evidence it appears that William Teel was the first immigrant ancestor in America. It appears that he came to America about 1680. An estimate on his birth date is given at 1660 by John Marshall Raymond.

William Teel was a carpenter according to town records. However, William appears to have a difficult time making a living to support his family. During his lifetime he was twice forgiven for debts he owed the town and was given six acres of land on which to build his home. In 1702 the records show that he forgiven a debt that he "was to pay to ye minestar in the in ye year 1699.." There are several other debts to private induviduals that were forgiven. However, despite his financial difficulties he appears to be well thought of in the town of Malden. This good feeling extended to his wife Mary as indicated by a notation in the town records for January 16,1735/1736, the town voted "that the town will do something towards the repairing of the widow teals hous; and that the select men shall repare said hous as they see necessary".
