The Peyton Randolph Family Home Page of Charlotte County, VA
Peyton Randolph, my great great grandfather was born in 1833, in Charlotte County, VA.He was believed to have been born on the plantation of slaveholder, John Randolph of Roanoke.Peyton was one of 300+ slaves who were released by slaveholder, Randolph, under the direction of his will. However, due to his family and other relatives, contesting the will, it stayed in court until 1846.The will also stipulated that land be purchased for them in the state of Ohio. The executor of his will carried out his bequest and bought land in the Miami Valley. They settled in an area called Piqua, Ohio. It is known history that although John Randolph of Roanoke, held slaves, he did not treat them as such.A strong opponent to slavery, many thought him strange; as he thought of them as an extended family. Mr. Randolph educated and trained his slaves; which is evident through their prosperity in Ohio.It is not known, through my research, whether Peyton journeyed to Ohio and returned to VA or never left Va at all.He later married Phillis and had four children:Mollie, Sallie, William and Jeff. With them began the saga of the Randolph Family | The Peyton Randolph Family Home Page of Charlotte County, VA Updated January 7, 2007 |
