Bath County

J. VANARSDELL, a prominent farmer and surveyor in Bath County, near
Sharpsburg, was born in Bath County, Ky., January 1, 1825. His father,
Isaac Vanarsdell, was born in Virginia, was a son of James Vanarsdell, and
came to Kentucky when a child with his parents, who settled in Mercer County
in 1791. He was a carpenter and cabinet-maker by trade, but by occupation a
farmer, and came to Bath County several years ago, where he lived a farmer
until his death in 1869. Prudence (Crouch) Vanarsdell, mother of our
subject, was born in Bath County, Ky., and was a daughter of David and
Elizabeth (Cassity) Crouch, natives of Virginia. Our subject, was brought
up on the farm, and received a very liberal business education. He chose
farming for an occupation, and has followed the same successfully all his
life. In 1847 he lived in Harrison County, Ky., but the following year
moved back to his native county, where he has resided ever since. He has
always devoted considerable attention to surveying, and was for many years
county surveyor of Bath County. He is a man of moral character, and is
regarded as one of Bath County's most industrious and enterprising farmers.
October 7, 1869, he was united in marriage with Miss Harriet Whaley, a
daughter of Charles C. and Amanda (Hill) Whaley, of Nicholas County, Ky.
There are two surviving children born to this marriage: Charles and Crit.
Mr. Vanarsdell is a Master Mason, is a member of the Presbyterian Church,
and is a Democrat.

Jonathan VAN ARSDELL(78) (49) was born on 1 Jan 1825 in Bath, Kentucky. (78)(87) (80) He died on 11 Jul 1907 in Bath, Kentucky. (80) Jonathan was known as "Uncle Buck". He was born on a farm and received a liberal business education and with the exception of one year spent in Harrison County he spent his entire life living in Bath County. It was written of him that he was a man of excellent habits, fine moral character, sturdy constitution, an invariably good neighbor and was known and highly esteemed throughout the county. He was the county surveyor for many years. He was a Master Mason.

Jonathan owned the land on which the Sharpsburg Fair was conducted.

Jonathan was a carpenter according to the 1850 Bath County, Kentucky census.

In the 1860 Bath County, Kentucky census (page 44, line 8) taken on 14 June Jonathan is shown to be 34 years old. He is shown to be a farmer with real estate valued at $10800 and personal property worth $1260. He is living with a farm hand James Taylor age 26 with a personal property worth $500.

The Bath County, Kentucky census (page 84, line 16) for 1870 lists Jonathan (45) as farmer with $20000 in real estate and $8000 in personal property. He is living with his wife Harriet (30), Julia Whaley (26), Bill Whaley (19), and C____ Whaley (21) a farmer. There are also 7 Blacks working on the farm.

In the 1880 Bath County, Kentucky census (Precinct 1, Sharpsburg) Jonathan is 55 years old and is a farmer. He is living with his wife Harriet (40) a housewife and their sons Charley (9) and Crit (6).

The 1900 Bath County, Kentucky census for Sharpsburg (page 15a, line 8) taken on 7 June shows John to be born in January 1825. He is widowed, owns his farm free and clear and is a surveyor.

In the 1860 Bath County, Kentucky census he is shown to be 29 years old. He is a farmer with a personal property value of $3780. He is living with Ben J. Whaley age 27 with a personal property value of $1650.

The 1870 Bath County, Kentucky census for Bethel taken on 25 July (page 8, line 5) shows Isaac (33 or 38) as a farmer with $1000 in real estate and $750 in personal property. He is living with his wife Laura (29) who was keeping house, Hannie (1/12), Alfred Crouch (39 or 32) a farm laborer and Celia Crouch (50) a Black domestic.

He was in Bath County at the time of his marriage.

Moved to Flemming County Kentucky.

1900 Magisterial District 4 > District 41, Fleming KY he is widowed living with his kids, all of them claim to be born in Feb of diff years? either they had sex on their anniversary every year or it was easier to celebrate all birthdays at the same time every year?
