Ancestors of John James Wheaton

Generation No. 4

      8. John Wheaton, born 13 November 1818 in Egg Harbor Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey; died 03 August 1897 in Massachusetts?. He was the son of 16. Joseph Wheaton and 17. Margaret Null. He married 9. Laura W. Atwood 14 September 1856 in 47 Beach St., New York, New York.

      9. Laura W. Atwood, born 01 October 1833 in Ohio33; died 18 April 1858 in Manhattan, New York County, New York34. She was the daughter of 18. Chauncey Watson and 19. Anna Brundige.

Notes for John Wheaton:
John Wheaton must have left the family farm between the 1840 and 1850 U.S. Census dates. He is not listed in New York City directories for the years 1827-43 (1) or 1847-49 (2). He is listed in the 1850 census of New York, p. 225.

(1) Longworth's American Almanac, New York Register and City Directory.
(2) Doggett's New York City Directory.

Census, 1850, 22 August: John Wheaton, fifth ward, County of New York (aka Borough of Manhattan), age 31, occupation: butter merchant. Several unrelated persons are listed for the same location, indicating he lived in an apartment house.

Census, 1860, 21 July: Fifth ward of New York County: John Wheaton, age 41, is living with Chauncey and Anna Watson, and son James, probably at 47 Beach Street. (Beach Street was in the fifth ward during the 1850 and 1860 censuses.)

Census, 1870, 21 August: 20th ward of Kings County: John Wheaton, age 51, is living with Mary (age 32), Will (age 6), Annie (age 4), Laura (age 1) and Bridget Ryan, servant, age 22, b. in Ireland.

In the 1900 census, the listing for John W. Wheaton, son of John and Mary Blackington Wheaton, states that John W. and Mary were both born in Massachusetts. We can presume then that the elder John left New York City sometime after Laura's death and settled in Massachusetts. This would also explain why James W. Wheaton, the son of Laura, was left in the care of his grandmother in New York City.

The New York City directory for 1869 lists John Wheaton & Co., provisions, 261 Washington St., h. Brooklyn. If this John is the right one, he must have moved to Brooklyn in 1869, perhaps shortly after Chauncey Watson's death.

The 1890 New York City directory lists John S. Wheaton, meat, at 36 E. 43 St, h. Mt. Vernon, New York. There is a slim chance this is the same John Wheaton.

Notes for Laura W. Atwood:
Laura W. Atwood was born in Ohio, but we do not know exactly how she is related to Chauncey and Ana (Ann) Watson. Since they are listed as witnesses to her marriage to John Wheaton, we presume they are her parents. Ann is referred to as James W. Wheaton's grandmother in his school records.
A family Bible belonging to Ann contains many names of Watson and Brundige family members. She is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible, perhaps indicating she was adopted or a niece of some sort. Therefore, all of Laura's kinship is unconfirmed.
We also do not know why her surname is Atwood. She may have been married before, which could be unlikely considering she was 23 when she married John Wheaton. It is also possible, but not likely that Ann Watson married an Atwood, then remarried. Laura is not included in 1840 or 1850 census listings for Chauncey Watson, at which time she would have been 7 or 17 years old. Perhaps she moved from Ohio to New York to live with Chauncey and Ann, and there met John Wheaton, who may have been boarding with them.
Laura died just seven months after the birth of her son James, suggesting she died of complications relating to that birth. Such an event was not uncommon before doctors adopted the practice of sterilizing their hands and instruments. Mothers died of infection, while their children survived.
Living near Philo Watson and family in 1850 were several Atwoods, in nearby Owen Township, Winnebago County, Illinois. This offers a clue as to the origins of Laura W. Atwood. Perhaps she was a relative by marriage of Philo, who kept in close touch with his brother, Chauncey, in New York City. We have a reference in Anna Watson's 1863 diary to a visit by Philo and Minerva to the City. Laura's birthplace of Ohio parallels the movements of Philo and family between 1835 and 1843. Perhaps Laura's family also moved from Ohio to Illinois as these families worked their ways across the Northwest Territories.
The New York Times has several advertisements in its September 1857 editions for Mrs. Wheaton's boarding school at 104 Second Avenue in Manhattan. Was Laura the principal of this school?

      10. Per Jonasson Börgström, born 01 November 1839 in Kövra, parish Myssjö, Sweden39; died Unknown in Saskatchewan, Canada40. He was the son of 20. Jonas Berg and 21. Lisbeth Pehrsdotter. He married 11. Ingrid Margreta Jonsdotter 10 April 1871 in Stugubyn, Sweden41.

      11. Ingrid Margreta Jonsdotter, born 27 September 1846 in Stugun, Sweden42,43; died Unknown in Saskatchewan, Canada. She was the daughter of 22. Jonas Jonsson and 23. Kristina M. Andersdotter.

Notes for Per Jonasson Börgström:
Per (or Pehr) Jonasson Borgström was a laborer when he married Ingrid, who was a servant for another family in her native parish of Stugun, Sweden. In those times, it was common for poor Swedes to work as servants of other families, particularly when their own families could not support them.

Per may have been married before he met Ingrid. In the 1890 census of Sweden, Elisabeth Kristina Borgström, is listed under family nr. 2, suggesting that she was a child by his first wife, or perhaps a niece. Ingrid and the other children are listed under family nr. 1.

The census corroborates the birthyears of all of the family members that we have already.

Typical of such workers, the couple had to move several times to support their growing family. The records in the archives in Östersund, Sweden, list at least six moves for the Borgström family until their emigration to Canada in the 1890s. Per left first, from Östersund, in 1896. Ingrid followed in 1889 from Frösö with their three youngest children (Karl, Anna and Ottilia).

Sometime during those moves, Per learned to be a shoemaker. His occupation is listed as "skomak.", or shoemaker, in the 1890 census of Sweden. After his arrival in Canada, he set up a shoemaker's shop in the frontier town of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. We have a photograph of this shop, with Per and family standing in front. The shop was listed in the 1905 city directory of Moose Jaw.
Of the older children, Elisabeth moved out of the household by 1883 or so. Nils and Jonas moved elsewhere in the United States. Anders was the only one to stay in Sweden.

  Notes for Ingrid Margreta Jonsdotter:
Ingrid was born to a poor farming family in Stugun parish in 1846. In 1867, at the age of 21, she left her family to be a servant (piga) for the family of Jonas Petter Jonasson and Christine Dol in Stugubyn.
      (Husförhörsling, Stuguns socken, 1846-1852, p. 100-101)
On 9 September 1871 she moved with Per Borgström of Oviken and two other males to Östersund. Per and Ingrid were married in April of the same year.
