Descendants of Uriah Wheaton

Generation No. 1

1. URIAH2 WHEATON (PETER1)1,2 was born 17103, and died 1746 in Cape May County, New Jersey3. He married ELINOR WHEATON4. She was born 02 January 1714/155, and died 1747 in Cape May County, New Jersey5.

Notes for U
RIAH WHEATON:
Family records holds that Uriah and Elinor Wheaton were parents of the children listed here. The Wheaton family Bible also records that Uriah and Elinor were second cousins, suggesting that the family legend about her Swedish ancestry may be less than factual.

The Cape May County Historical & Genealogical Society has letters that indicate that Joseph Wheaton's father was named Uriah, and that Uriah may have had brothers, Peter, Silas and Robert. There are references to Wheatons with those names in the neighboring counties of Salem and Cumberland.

The four brothers were descendents possibly of Robert Wheaton of Rehoboth. Swansea, Massachusetts, but there is again no documentation. There is some indication that one or more of Robert's grandchildren, namely Noah and Jonathan, may have settled in Trenton, New Jersey early in the 1700s with their mother. If they are the connection, it is likely that their children moved into southern New Jersey by the 1740s.

One source believes Noah Wheaton, a grandson of Robert, could be the link. Robert reportedly came from Wales, as did his wife, Alice Bowen. Robert and Alice had several children, whose offspring spread throughout New England, New York and New Jersey.

FamilySearch.org's IGI has an entry for a Peter Wheaton, son of Uriah Wheaton (b 1750), Gloucester, New Jersey. This Peter could be our Uriah's brother.

The National Genealogical Society Quarterly, vols. 1-85, 1600s-1900s printed the Sealing Docket of Gloucester County, New Jersey, beginning 1746. In it, a Uriah Wheaton is mentioned three times (pages 16, 17 and 19)

Notes for E
LINOR WHEATON:
Family legend has it that Elinor was a Delaware Swede, that is, a member of the Swedish colony in Delaware. However, the Wheaton family Bible records that she and Uriah Wheaton were second cousins.
