* The Wheatons of Cape May County, New Jersey*

Updated July 14, 2008

My branch of Wheatons settled in Cape May County, New Jersey, sometime before 1745. Joseph Wheaton, a Revolutionary War veteran, is my direct ancestor. He married Esther Willets, who had connections to the CORSONs, HANDs and WASHBURNs -- colonial families of Connecticut, Long Island and New Jersey. Some were Quakers.
Family Bible records list Joseph's parents as Uriah and Elinor Wheaton. There is a possibility, as yet unproven, that Uriah is a descendent of Robert Wheaton of Swansea, Massachusetts.

Recently, another researcher provided me information that suggests that Joseph Wheaton's brother (or first cousin), Uriah Wheaton, moved with his family from New Jersey to Ross County, Ohio. This branch of the family married into the PENISTON, PARKS, MYERS and KEEN families, and apparently spread into Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Arkansas.

My great-grandfather John Wheaton married an ATWOOD. Her father, John ATWOOD, married Alice BRUNDIGE while they were living in Genesee County, New York. While not technically part of my ancestry, the WATSONS of Genesee County, formerly of Saratoga County, New York and Hartford, Connecticut, married at least two BRUNDIGES.

I am especially interested in connecting with two "missing" branches of my family: possible descendents of my father's half brother (James Watson Wheaton Jr.), who was the son of James Watson Wheaton and Emma S. KETCHAM, and my grandfather's half-siblings (born of John Wheaton and Mary A. (Blackington) Wheaton).

James W. Wheaton and Emma lived in Chicago around 1900. Their son, James Jr., was born in 1876, moved to Omaha, Nebraska, by 1905 and later ended up in San Francisco, California, sometime after 1910. They also adopted a Canadian-born child, Florence Nichols, whom they renamed Gladys Wheaton.

John and Mary Wheaton lived in Rhode Island and Massachusetts after their marriage in 1860. They had four surviving children, John William, Annie May, Charles Nathan and Laura, all born between 1864 and 1872. Click the descendent report link below.

Any information about the WHEATON, WILLETTS, HAND, CORSON, WASHBURN, NULL, BLACKINGTON, WATSON, ATWOOD, PENISTON, MYERS, KEEN, HOFFMAN, TOWNSEND, PARKS and BRUNDIGE families is also welcome. I am interested particularly in the states of New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
