Gustave was a brother to Anna (Schmidt) Goettel. He and his second wife, Augusta Arndt were both killed by a cyclone on April 14, 1886 after performing a wedding. They are buried in Salem Cemetery, Paynesville, Minnesota. Gustave had one son from his previous marriage to Susan Britzius. She is buried in Winona, Minnesota.
