1. GERRETT¹ VANSWERINGEN was born 1636 in Reensterdwan (or Beemsterdam), Holland, and died February 04, 1697/98 in St. Marys County, MD. He married (1) BARBARAH DE BERETTE March 01, 1658/59 in Dutch Colony of New Amstel, DE, daughter of ISSAC DE BERETTE. She was born in Valenciennes, France, and died 1670 in St. Mary's County, MD. He married (2) MARY SMITH October 05, 1676. She was born in St. Mary's Co., Maryland.

Notes for GERRETT VANSWERINGEN:
Moved to America in March 8, 1657. Joined the Dutch West India Company and settled at Ft. Casimir, Delaware. Served in the Colonial Wars. He was a merchant, served as a clerk, and later served as sheriff. After Delaware he surrended to the English and moved his family to Maryland where they were naturlized in April 1669 (excerpted from Yalobusha Bound, Chris Morgan.) After he married Mary Smith, he became an innkeeper of Smiths Ordinary in 1670 until 1676. He tried to set up a brewing house and burned before completion. He set up another inn in the State House or Council Chambers Building that had been vacated providing lodging and entertainment to visiting governments until his death.
