Notes for M
ARY ELIZABETH SWEARENGEN:
Owned and operated a country store called Jones Grocery Store in Wren, Mississippi. The gas was City Services and the name changed to Citgo in the 70's. The house was attached to the back of the store. Mr. Bob's "little house" was to the left of the property. There was a cow pasture behind the store and a field of cotton and corn to the left of Mr. Bob's home. The well house had the sweetest cool water and there was always a dipper made of enamel ware placed in a enamel ware pale. Grandmother always had watermelon growing in her little patch beside the garage. The outhouse was to the left of the gravel drive way. It seemed like a long way from the in house if the need arised in the middle of the night. And, of course, there was always a Sears catalog to view while doing your business. Grandmother acquired in door plumbing in the late 60's. We used to take our baths in the tub on the back porch. The massive hunk of steel called a wringer wash machine rested on the back porch. When the house was updated, adding on a back room, the porch became in the in door bathroom and the pump in the kitchen sink was replaced by a faucet. Back then we went outside in the evenings because outdoors was cooler than the house. Getting asleep in the backroom was sometimes difficult with your legs sticking together from the sweat caused by the stifling heat. Box fans were used to hopefully pull out the hot air and allow a cool breeze to permiate the room. Usually went to sleep with just a sheet placed lightly across your body, but in the cool of the night, searching for warmer covers. I played on her propane tank as if it were a tall handsome horse riding off across the field. We had a very active imagination back then. We loved the metal chairs that would bounce while sitting in them. We helped to burn the trash in the trash burning can and gave the cows some of the wet trash.
