I did not order that of John Pendley because I think I have identified this man (Revolutionary soldier). I did ordercopies of the following older grants: 1783 - the earliest land grant File # 654 - State of North Carolina #656 Know ye that we have granted unto William Penley fifty acres of land in Burke County on North fork of the Upper /c/reek, beginning at a white oak on the north side of the creek running _____ _____ five chains to a pine the south twenty chains crossing the creek with Thomas Scotts line to a pine ___ _____twenty five chains, to a stake then North twenty chains crossing the creek to the beginning_____ ______William Penly his heirs and asigns forever, the 11th day of October 1783. 1792 File # 1596, State of North Caroline #1567 Know ye that we have granted unto Joshua Peenley one hundred acres of land in our County of Burke on Upper Creek beginning at a white walnut on west bank of the creek in Thomas Scotts line running west eighty five chains to a pine thense north forty chains to a pine thense East twenty five crossing the creek with his own line to a stake then South forty chains crossing the creek to the beginning to hold to said Joshua Penley his heirs and asigns forever dated the 7th day of November 1792. 1794 - File #1802, State of North Carolina #1768 Know ye that we have granted unto Joshua Penley fifty acres of land in our county of Burke on (Smockey Creek waters of the Catawtia River joining his own land on the north beginning at the Creek and runs south eighty poles to a small __ then East fourteen poles to a creek crossing the ____came course eighty six poles to a large pine the north eight poles to ___penleys line then West to the beginning____to the said Penley his heirs and asigns forever dated the 7the day of July 1794 Page 000 1799 - File # 2804 - State of North Carolina, number 2593 Know ye that we have granted unto William Pendley one hundred acres of land in Burke County on the middle fork of James Mill Creek beginning a a chestnut tree in Ch___lane Coffeys old line running Eas crossing the creek twenty five chains to a black oak in Baird and Ervins line thense North forty chains to a stake in Martin Jr.___________line thense West which said line crossing te creek twenty five chains to a black oak in Coffeys lline thnse South with said line to the beginning. These will, however, come in handy wehn we get a map showing the locations Page 1 THE PENDLEY FAMILY THE MANOR OF PENDLEY (Tring, Hertfordshire, England) In the time of William the Conqueror, Pendley Manor was held by Earl Moreton, by virtue of a grant from the Crown, and is thus recorded in Domesday Survey. The Earl himself holds two hides in PENTLAI. In King Edwards time it was worth forty shillings. Eddeva nun, held this land of Ingelric: she could not give it away. According to Sir Henry Chauncy, who quotes the Court Rolls of the Manor for his authority, this Manor was held of the Honor of Berkhamsted, from the 10th year of the reign of King Edward the Second to the 24th of King Edward the Third. John delaHay, Knight Lord of Pendley, in time of King Edward the Third, his daughter Alice married Robert Whitynham in the year 1419. NOTE: The above is a small quote from a long account of the Manor of Pendley, by courtesy of Mr. Taylor Pendley of Dallas, TX While no person named Pendley is mentioned in this account, it does show clearly that the name is an old one, and spelled exactly as it is today. The variation of PENTLAI is earlier still. We can be almost certain that Pendley was Anglo Saxon and that the people by this name came from England. I do not know who founded this family in America. It could have been William Pendley from Wales who settled in Virginia, or it could have been Jonathan Pendley who came from England in 1700. The first authetic records were found in North Farnham Parish,Richmond County, Virginia: Thomas, son of Willam and Mary Penly, born July 8, 1709 Mary , daughter of William and Mary Penly, born 1712 Thomas, son of Thomas and Sarah Penley, born July 6, 1732 Joshua, son of Thomas and Sarah Penley, born 1736 Marg. Pendley died 1749 This appears to be three generation, William and Mary who had son Thomas; Thomas who married Sarah and had sons Thomas and Joshua. I am at times inclined to think that all the Pendleys stemmed from this William and Mary, but do not have enough evidence at this time to prove it. We next picked the name up in Morgan District, Burke, North Carolina in census of 1790 William Penly Sr. 2 males, 16 years and up 3 males under 16 and 3 females Page 2 Same location WILLIAM PENLY JR. 3 males 16 and up 1 female JOSHUA PENDLEY 1 male 16 and up 3 males under 16 4 females Page 109 - same location JAMES PENDLEY 1 male 16 and up 1 male under 16 1 female The name COGLE also appears in the records of North Carolina. Rutherford, Burke County, North Carolina No will of any Pendley recorded there. Two grantor deeds of James Penland recorded 1803. Though the name Penland does not seem to fit into this record, it could hace been the sames as James Penly who left North Carolina between 1804 and 1810. 1800 census of North Carolina - Vol 1, Burke County, page 196 PENLEY, JOSHUA, age between 26 and 45 p.197 PENDLEY NANCY, age between 26 and 45 She was probably the widow of one of the men in 1790. 1810 Census of North CaroliNA p. 210 WILLIAM PENLY, age between 26 and 45 P. 211 JOSHUA PENLY, age between 26 and 45 p. 211 JOHN PENLY, age between 26 and 45 1820 Census of North Carolina, Vol. V P.28 PENLEY, JOHN, 45 years and over PENLEY, CHRISTIAN, age between 26 and 45 p. 25 PENDLEY, ISAAC, age 45 and over p. 27 PENLEY, JOSHUA, age 45 and over PENLEY, WILLIAM, age between 26 and 45 REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER FROM BURKE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA PENLY, JOHN, 25 of July 1834, age 72 (born 1762) applied for pension under Act of June 7, 1832 (S-7302). On roll of North Carolina, pension issued to Morgantown, North Carolina, and swore on oath that he was born in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. When 17 or 18 year of age his father moved to Burke County, North Carolina (1780). Soon afterwards he enlisted as a volunteer in Capt. John Russell, Col. Joseph McDowell, commanding, Morgantown, Burke County, North Carolina. Served three months, June to September 1780. In 1781 enlisted again under Capt. Rueben White, Col. Joseph Mc Dowell, Morgantown. Served three monthsm duscharged at Wilmington, shortly before Christmas. He was paid to 4th September 1841 in Burke Co. NC NOTES: Taken from original file, he stated he had lived in Burke Co. 55 yrs. Does not appear in census of 1790. Could have been living with father PAGE 3 PENDLEY OTHERS IN THE REVOLUTION PENDLEY, ALEXANDER, Virginia in the Revolution PENDLEY, JOSEPH, of Maine, on pension list 1840 PENLY, WILLIAM, Revolutionary war records of Virginia, Vol.I, page597, plate 7 Henry Nelson Jr.s census list of Dunsmore Co., now Page Co.,November 1775 Family #11, males 7, females 4, over 16, 4 under 16, 7 1800 (another source) Census of Burke County, North Carolina PENLEE, WILLIAM PENLEE, JOSHUA 1830 census of Burke Co., North Carolina PENDLEY, WILLIAM, ager between 60 and 70 1 male 5-10 1 male 20-30 2 females 15-20 1 female 20-30 1 female 60-70 PENDLEY, WILLIAM 20-30 years PENLY, JOSHUA, age between 70-80 1 male 5-10 1 female 10-15 3 males 15-20 2 females 20-30 1 male 20-30 1 female 40-50 PENLY, JOHN, age between 60-70 1 male under 5 1 male 20-30 1 female 20-30 1 female 70-80 PENLY, NANCY, age between 30-35 2 females under 5 2 females 5-10 2 females 10-15 PENLY, CHRISTIAN, age between 50-60years 1 male 15-20 Rutherford County North Carolina had been created from Burke County in 1779 KENTUCKY 1790 census of Kentucky show no PENDLEYS 1800 census of Kentucky shows no PENDLEYS in Butler County 1810 census of Kentucky shows no PENDLEYS in Butler County 1820 census of Butler County, Kentucky, Vol. I PENERLY, JOSEPH, age between 16-26 PENERLY, ASTIN, page 121, age between 16-26 1 male under 10 1 female 1830 census of Butler County, Vol. V, page 23 PENLEY, AUSTIN, age 40-50 PENLEY, SMITH, age 20-30 PENLEY, JOSEPH, age 30-40 Page 4 1830 census of Butler County, Kentucky - continued PENDLEY, ALFRED, age 30-40 PENLEY, SOLOMON, age 60-70 PENLEY, JAMES, age 40-50 3 males 10-15 1 male 15-20 REGISTER OF KENTUCKY STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY Vol 42, Page 185 Butler County, Kentucky Butler County was settled mostly by immigrants from Virginia and North Carolina. TAYLOR PENDLEY Copy of a letter written by George Pendley, Nortonville, KY., July 9, 1907 to John Pendley. (Original letter in possession of Mrs. M. E. Sedberry 109 S. Jackson , San Angelo, Texas) Well John I seen Henry the other day ___________. Henry ways according to his information Jonathan Pendley came from Cornwall, England to Rutherford County, North Carolina and brought nine boys and two girls about the year 1700. He was Henrys great grandpa and he dont know any of their names except JAMES, his grandpa and he came to Barren County about 1780. He raised 12 children, 10 boys and two girls. He came to Butler County about 1804. He married Moness Smith. Grandpa married Nancy Childress about 1818 and raised 8 children. Grandpa had nine brothers and two sisters, Alfred, Joseph, Austin, Larkin, Solomon, Levi, Smith, James, Billie and Ben. Grandpa marriied about 1814. He was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina. His children were Lavina, Ben, Meredith, Isaac, Mahala, Sally, Henry, Harison. Grandpa died June 19, 1874. Grandma died January 2, 1862. This is partly guesswork with Henry. I close. George Pendley NOTE: The grandpa in the last paragraph is Joseph Pendley, see Butler County marriages, and census giving names of children which fit the names given here. A LETTER FROM CHESTER R. PENDLEY, Mortons Gap, KY, dated March 1, 1962 to Mrs. William McCain of Greenwood, Mississipi: Dear Mrs. McCain, _______________ It seens JAMES PENDLEY lived in South Carolina (see note below) and had a son Smith Pendley who came to Butler Co., KY. One son of Smith Pendley named Joe came from Butler Co. and took up land just south of Mortonville, KY on now Hwy #41. He had one son Benjamin. I cannot verify if Benjamin was born near Mortonville or was born in Butler Co. before Joe came to Mortonville. They came to Mortonville about 1848. Benjamin married Emily Baucum who was one half Cherokee Indian. Ben and Emily had 11 children, one of which was my father, Philllip Pendley. Two of the children of Ben and Emily had no children. The others had families, some rather large. My father married Julie Sharber and they had 6 childen, all living. My mother died in 1937 at 66, and my father died in 1954, at 90. My older brother is Clarence Pendley, Evansville, IN, age 67, sister Audra Smith, Nortonvillle, age 65, sister Myrtle Franklin, Madisonville,KY, age 64, myself, age 53, sister Mabel Outlaw, White Plains KY, age 50, Cecil Pendley of Nortonville, age 47. I have one son, Chester Randall (Randy) Pendely, Jr., now in second year of college. I married Robbie Stanley of White Plains, KY. This my branch of the family, but more of this family stayed in Butler, Co. near Morgantown, and a large number of Pendleys originated from that branch, in fact, some of them now live in Mortons Gap, KY and are distantly related to me. I do not have necessary information to give your any reliable history. To my knowledge all Pendleys in this part of the coutry originated originally the same family. NOTE: The above letter says James Pendley came from South Carolian, but in all the records we have found, it seems to be North Carolina It will also be noted that in George Pendleys letter to John Pendley it states tjat James came to Barren Co.. We have norecords for this county which is found on a map of Kentucky, county seat, Glasgow, less than 100 miles due south of Louisville, and Glasgow is a little over 100 miles east by south of Madisonville, the county seat of Hopkins Co. It is logical enough that James passed through Barren Co. and may have lived there for a few years before going to Butler Co., which may account for the fact that James Pendly does not appear in any of the earliest census records of Butler Co. where Perrins says he came in 1804. The year of 1804 is a puzzle to me, not only because he did not appear in the early records of Butler Co., where he was supposed to be, but also because the birthyear of Levi Pendley, born in North Carolina 1810, and supposed to be the son of James. We have authentic proof (from a record, see page 13) of only one son, SMITH PENDLEY, son of James. All the other chidren of James are given in George Pendleys letter ALFRED, age 30-40 in 1830 (1790-1800) JOSEPH, born 1798, NC AUSTIN, born 1797, NC LARKIN, born 1797, NC SOLOMON, born 1802, NC LEVI, born 1810,NC SMITH, born 1805, NC JAMES BILLIE (probably WILLIAM) BEN (probably BENJAMIN) In the census records we have found mention of all of these men, and the dates of their births from the census are added on by me following the manes, as well as I can work out. It will be noted that in the earliest records, 1830 census of Butler Co. there is a Solomon, age between 60-70, born between 1760 and 1770, and is an older man than the Solomon who apears in 1850. This older Solomon may have been a brother to James. In 1830 there is a James, age 40-50, born between 1780-1790, who could possibley be the father of all these brothers though it seems to be stretching things somewhat. It could have been if he married yooung. But whether James Pendley married young or not, we will not know this until we fnd the date of his marriage. We have searched the records of Rutherford and Burke Counties without finding a James who married Moness Smith. Or should we saay, we have had the records searched for us. In census of 1840 under Austin Pendley we find a man age 80-90 (does not appear with Austin in 1850) born between 1750-1760, and this may be the father, James. SAnd this is even an older James than the one appearing in the census of 1830. It is therefore impossible for us to locate JAMES PENDLEY, the father from these records. Something much better will have to be found to prove James the father of all these sns as given by George Pendley in his letter to Joh. If LEVI PENDLEY, given among the sons, were the sons of James, then we know that James could not have come to KY. until after 1810 when Levi was born. And Smith Pendley, the only one of whom we have found a record of being son of James, (Perrins History) was born in 1805. I therefore cast some doubt on James having come to KY so early. Quite a lot more research will need to be done, and it seems to me that NC is the place to start. PAGE 18 Going back still further to the Jonathan who cane from England in 1700, according to George Pendleys letter, it would seen almost impossible for this Jonathan to have been the father of James, there is too great a span of years. Perhaps, there is another generation between them, which would make things much more logical. In Burke Co., NC in the census of 1790 we find William Penly, Sr., William Penly, Jr., Joshua and James. Could William Jr., Joshua and James have been the sons of William, Sr.? We cannot discount the pension application of John Penly, the Revolutionary soldier of Burke Co. who swore on oath that he came to Burke Co. with his father about 1780 and who was born in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. If John were the brother of James, this is a clue to where the family had lived before coming to NC. In my search of Brke Co. records, a James Penland sold land, making two grantor deeds in 1803. Whether this is the same as James Pendley, I do not know. Sally Pendley who married Edward Ridley in 1815 (see page 12) Hopkins marriages, could have been one ot the two daughters of James Pendley. It is the earliest marriage recorded. On following pages, I have put down a brief account of the men listed in George Ppendleys letter, all thos born in NC, and who appear to be possibly brothers and possibly son of James. 1. JOSEPH PENDLEY, born 1798 in NC, probably son of JAMES. Hemay have been the Joseph who had land grant in Butler Co. 1828 (the earliest land grant of anyone byy this name in Butler Co.) Under the name Penerly, he first appeared in census 1820 Butler Co. married but at that time had no children. His marriage to Nancy W. Childer, December 15, 1819 is recorded in Butler Co. marriages (page 12). He appears in census 1830 and 1850, though between these date he had moved from Butler Co. to Hopkins Co. In the letter from George Pendley to Jon (page 16) his children are given as Lavina, ben, Meredith, Isaac, Mahala, Sally, Henry and Harison. These names are verified by the Hopkins Co. census of 1850 (page 5) which gives wife Nancy, children, Meredith, Mahala, Sarah, Henry and William . In 1850 census also he was living near Levi Pendley which suggests they were brothers. 2. AUSTIN PENDLEY born 1797 in NC, could have been son of JAMES. He appears firs in census 1820 Butler Co. and Austin Penerly, and as Austin Penley in 1830, as Austin Pendley in 1850, wife Jane and child Ellender. His marriage to Jane Dennis is recorded iin Butler Co., March 2, 1819 (page 12). He is supposed to be a twin to Larkin Pendley, but in census of 1840 (page 4) Austins age is given between 40-50, while Larkins is 30-40. Austin Pendley died in KY. He had two children Ellender and Francis. Francis Pendley, born 1820 KY, died 1890, KY, married Casander Whitaker, born 1827, died 1897. There children were Moriah J., born 1844m Mary E., 1846, George H., 1850, John, 1853,died 1922, Sara J., 1855, died 1939, Irene M., 1856, died 1948, Columbus, born 1851, died 1934. PAGE 19 Columbus Byron Pendley, son of Francis and Casandermborn 1861 in Morgantown , KY, married Glennis McKenney, had children, Cicero, Homer, Adolphus, Raymond, Wm. Francis, Glenn, Clara, Oscar Bryan and Lois Adolphus R. Pendley, son of Columbus and Glennie, born 1893 8n Morgantown KY. married Emma Palmer and had children, Carroll Austin, Velma Rozelle, H. Taylor, born 1918 OK, Mavis G., Joyce. 3. SMITH PENDLEY, born 1805 in NC, son of JAMES (Perrins History says James was of SC, which is not correct) In a letter from Mr. Alton Pendley of South Hill. KY, March 3, 1964 he says I have taken this information from our old family Bible. The Pendleys were from NC. Smith Pendley was my great grandfather, Smith Scott Pendley was my grandfather. From the Bible; SMITH PENDLEY, 1805 SALLY, HIS WIFE, 1811 MILES, 1826 JAMES ,1830 LEVI, 1832 ELIZABETH, 1834 DAVID, 1836 MELIA, 1840 SOLOMON, 1844 SMITH SCOTT, 1852 Smith Pendley appears in the 1840 census of Butler Co. and in 1860, same county, had wife Sarah, children, Amelia, Solomon, Smith G. (correctly Smith S.) which verifies the Bible. See page 13 for Perrins account of David Hall Pnedley, son of Smith and Sarah Whitaker. The Sally of the Bible and of the marriage records (page 12) must have been a nickname for Sarah. The census of 1860 says she was born in MS. Smmith married Sally (Sarah) February 17, 1825. In the land grants of Butler Co. we find Smith Pendley bought 50 acres of land on Sandy Creek, the survey dated December 10, 1836. Mr Alton Pendley stated in his letter that he thought we had two sets of children mixed up in the children of James. 4. ALFRED PENDLEY appears in Butler Co. census 1830 (page4) age between 30-40 (born between 1790-1800 but I do not find him in later records. In Butler Co. marriages (page 12) we find his marriage record to Elizabeth Step, January 11, 1827, In KY Land warrants (page 11) we find an Alfred Pendley purchased 5- acres of land on the Green River in Butler Co. land surveyed March 8, 1832 5. SOLOMON PENDLEY, born 1802 in NC, could have een son of James (not to be confused with older man named Solomon in 1830 - page 4). We found younger Solomon in Butler Co, 1860, age 58, wife Nancy, children, Joseph W., Malisa T., Miles H., Martha Q. No marriage record found. The older solomon may have been the one found in Christian Co. earlier. 6. JAMES PENDLEY, found in census 1830m age 40-50, born between 1780-1790. Other James in later census records do no appear to be same man, for 10 yrs. later in 1840 the only James is a single mand 20-30. The land records show a James and a James Sr. 7. LARKIN PENDLEY appeats in 1840 census (page 4) in Butler Co. 40-50 (born between 1790-1800) had wife, three children. In 1850 census he appears as Learkin Penly, age 53, born NC, wife Nancy, childenm Virgil, Mary, James, Thomas E. Nelson B., in 1860 we find him again with wife Nancy, children D. Edwin, Nelson, Nancy, Benjamin. It would appear from the census that Larkin and Austin were twinsm both born 1797. but the census of 1840(page 4) shows a difference in their ages. The land records show a Larkin bought land in 1853. PAGE 20 8. BENJAMIN PENDLEY It is impossible for me to work out anything about this man since he hoes not appear in early census records. See land grants (page 11) and no marriage record for a Benjamin before 1844. 9. WILLIAM PENDLEY, no William in early records that we can find. In 1860 there was a William age 44, born 1816 in Kentucky and this is more likely to be a grandson than a son of James. 10. LEVI PENDLEY, born NC in 1810. This name appears in the list of James Pendleys sons. the earliest record found was his marriage to Catherine Ewing in January 1833 in Muhlenberg Co. (page 12). We do not know where or when he died. He and Catherine made a deed in Hopkins Co. in 1867, We have found no record of Levi having been in AR., so whether he came out to Carroll Co. with Catherine, or whether she came alone as a widow, I do not know. Levi must have died before 1873 when Catherine married again in AR. Levi does not appear in the census of 1830 but he was in Hopkins Co. in 1840-1850 and 1860. In 1850 his children were given as John E., Jacob, Mary J., Joshua, Susan, Joseph G., and as complete a list as we can get in these records. Miss Evelyn Pendley has a Bible record sent to her by an aunt. In the bible it is John Henry and not John E. Miss Pendley also added three names to the list of children, Hester who married J.D. Haygood, America who married Hand , and Elizabeth who married Whitely. We have not yet found any references to Hester and America but there is in Carroll Co. marriage records (page 15) the record of Thomas Elizabeth Pendley, age 17, and James E. Whitely, age 25, married May 25, 1871. The unusual name of Thomas Elizabeth made me double check and look it up in Vital Statistics of Hopkins Co.KY. A Thomas E. was born to Levi and Catherine June 5, 1854 and I was much surprised to find out the child I had thought to be a boy was a girl. Miss Pendley also added the information that Catherines middle name was Cogle (page 11 &12) I have made little attempt to trace the name Cogle, which could possibly be her mothers maiden name. I did try to trace the Ewings, but had little success. The Cogles and Ewings might have come to AR from KYearlly, but I have not veen able to pick them up in AR. Now we come to a perplexing problem. Miss Pendleys aunt had in in her bible that Catherine Cogle Ewing had married John Pendley. I could not find any record to prove this, but the records of Levi and Catherine are indisputable and are accepted proof of lineage. It is just one of those things that seem impossible to straighten out and my only explanation is that Levi was really John Levi and had dropped the John, and we know that dropping one or anothers name is a commonn practice. Since there is supposed to be a Levi in the childrenof James Pendley, but no John, Im rather hoping no one will come along to prove this Levi was John !! That would throw out all hope of this man, usband of Catherine being in the family of James. There is a marriage recod in Carroll Co. AR for Catherine Pendley, age 58 to George W. Forrest, age 60, married February 27, 2873 (page 15). Checking Catherines age against the year of her birth 1815, it can be seen that this indeed is Catherine, widow of Levi. It is possible that she came to AR with her sons, or she may have come later, bringing her young daughterm Thomas Elizabeth with her. I have personally copied all the inscriptions from the grave stones of three cemeteries at Green Forest, as well as all those at Zion Hill, but the name Forrest is not in any of them. PAGE 21 The children of Levi and Catherine: 1. JOHN H. PENDLEY, born March 15,1834, died at Whitfield, TX in 1922. He was married to Isabinda Oldham, April 8, 1856 in Hopkins Co. KY. She was the daughter of Elias and Artemesia Oldham and was born in 1839. About 1860 the came to AR where they lived for a few years at Green Forest, where his brother Jacob settled also. It is believed that three brothers cane to AR together, but we have yet to learn the name of the third brother. According to Goodspeedds Historyof Carroll Co., published 1889, the town of Green Forest was nothing mre than an outpost in 1869, with very few buildings and a few stores. During the War between the States, what buildings were there were destroyed. . The town must have been very slow in recovering after the War for, in 1874 there were but three houses in town. There was only one painted house in the town in 1880. Green Forest is in Hickory Township, and probably most of the people who lived in this township in 1860-1870 lived on farms around the settlement of Green Forest. While there John H. Pendley had a tannery and made shoes. He was a soldier in the Confederate army and a prisoner of war. After going to TX, the family lived in Plainview. John Henry, son of John Henry and Isabinda Oldham was born 1866 at Green Forest AR and died June 29, 1922 in New Mexico. He married Virginia F. McCormick. Coleman Pnedly, son of Joh Henry and Virginia was born June 18, 1892 in Tx. Married Maggie Langston on December 1, 1915. She was born February 14, 1898 in TX and died April 30, 1957. Their daughter, Evelyn Pendley was born October 5, 1916 in New Mexico. 2. JACOB PENDLEY (sometimes called Jake) son of Levi and Catherine (Ewing) was born in 1835/6 in Hopkins Co. He died after the census of 1870 and before 1888. Jacob Pendley was married August 20, 1854 in Hopkins Co. to Louisa Jane Clark (page 12) in the home of her father James W. Clark. James Clark and John Page were witnesses. Louisa Jane was born Hopkins Co., July 27, 1835 and died at Green Forest. March 4, 1916, buried at Pickens cemetery at Green Forest. The stone only had JANE and descendents have told me that she was more often called Jane than Louisa. At the time of her death, her sons and daughters wanted to have her buried beside her husband Jacob who was buried at Zion Hill, but they could not find his grave, so she was buried at Green Forest. I spent a whole day trying to find Zion Hill, copying all the stone inscriptions and finding my way home. It is located about 3 1/2 mile from Green Forest, in a rather difficult area to find. There was no one at all buried in Zion Hill with a Pendley name on a stone. Jacob and Louisa Jane had come to AR about 1859-1860. Just where they settled is not known but in 1860 they were in Crooked Creek township and in 1870 in Carrollton Township, No Crooked Creek Township is listed in Carroll Co. in Goodspeeds history 1889. Carrollton Township borders on Hickory Township and the Boone Co. line. Its voting place was Carrollton, the county seat until 1869. PAGE 22 Several times I have gone to Carrollton on Hwy #68, some twelve miles southeast of Green Forest. It is a beautiful drive through gentle, rollling hill but one can drive right through the town of Carrollton without seeing it for it is now just a cluster of abandoned buildings and one store. It is said that some 50 persons live there, but on one visit to the town which lasted about 2 hours, I saw only three people. I did not go there to look for Pendleys but for anothere family who were said to have once lived there. I learned that the ghost town was once one of the most important towns in all of northeren AR, situated in a valley with cold clear water gushing from a mountain spring, it offered rest to the weary travelers on the old Stage Coach linen between Springfield, MO and Huntsville in Madison Co. It was the gateway to the west and here had come thousands of people, and here they had stopped to rest their tired horses, to repair their wagons, to sleep overnight or for a few days in hotels and eat well prepared food. It was the great last stopping place of civilization as the pioneers pushed westward. But as civilized as it seemed to the travelers, it was still a raw and burly town, its roads narrow, rough and steep and had only one supply route, on which the wagon trains brought supplies from Springfield. It is so rich in exciting history it would fill a book of its own. It is not known were Jacob and Louisa lived, but it was probably on a farm somewhere between Green Forest and Carrollton. I once tried the old road between the two towns but soon gave it up and turned back, for even in a car it was a very lonely road. CHILDREN OF JACOB AND LOUISA JANE (CLARK) PENDLEY HELEN CLINE SUSANNA OR SUSAN, born 1855 in Hopkins Co. GEORGE W. PENDLEY, born November 19 or 25, 1857 in Hopkins Co. KY. He was killed by a tornado which struck Green Forest on March 18, 1927 and their home ws completely destroyed. Leet was daughter of one of the earliest pioneers in Green Forest. She died in CA in November 1962. Children of James Lacy and Leet Ellis, living 1962 Cline, living in CA in 1963, married Celestia _________ Frank, born 1899, died 1933, married Lillian _____who was born in 1902, died 1933. Their daughter was raised by Cline and Celestia. Charles Willard (possibly a girl) Flossie Helen A letter from Celestia says: The Pendleys were of English descent. My husbands uncles were Levi who married Annie Reagan, James Lacy who married Leet Harbert (my husbands parents) and George Pendley who married Susan Alice Reeves. George and Alice had a son James Dennis. Elizabeth, one of the girls in the family married her cousin J.J.Pendley from another branch of the family 7. Francais Lee, son of Jacob amd Louisa Jane . I have found no record, but a letter from Celestia says that this is probably Levi who married Annie Reagan (see Carroll Coounty marriages, page 15). The marriage record says he was 22 when married in 1887 which would make his birth year 1865. According to the census of 1870, Francais Lee was four years old, making his birth year 1866, and these dates are so close that it would appear that Brancais Lee and Levi were the same person. The name could have been Francais Levi, but this is not proven. PAGE 24 8. Elizabeth Pendley, daughter of Jacob and Louisa Jane, called Lize, was born 1868 in AK. Married her cousin J.J.Pendley of Hilltop, Boone Co. AK. Her age on the marriage record was 17, which fits the census record of her birth. 9. Baby girl, one month old in 1870. Mrs. Cline Pendley says that there were three girls unnamed in the census, Tishie, Mattie, Bindie. The baby girl would have been one of these three. This makes a total of eleven children for Jacob and Louisa Jane Clark. For a complete record of Louisa Janes family see CLARK FAMILY. (3) MARY JANE PENDLEY, daughter of Levi and /Catherine (Ewing ) Pendley, born in Hopkins Co. Kentucky in 1837, married Thomas Offutt, January 1, 1856 in Kentucky (page 12). (4) JOSHUA PENDLEY, son of Levi and Catherine, born in KY in 1843 (5) SUSAN PENDLEY, daughter of Levi and Catherine, born in KY in 1843 (6) JOSEPH PENDLEY, born 1845 in KY, died 1894. This could have been the Joseph who married Martha A. Ayers in Hopkins Co. (page 12) (7) NANCY A. , daughter of Levi and Catherine, born 1848 in KY. (8) THOMAS E., (Vital Statistics of KY) probably Thomas Elizabeth who married James E. Whitely in Green Forest AK, May 25, 1871 (page 15) Vital statistics give her birth as June 5, 1854 (Page 14) (9) HESTER and (10) AMERICA not verified. Hester married J. D. Haygood and America married Hale.
