Jesse is one of those that discovered the spelling of the name was actually Caudill and convinced several brothers, cousins, and uncles to change it back. He was a school teacher and farmer. He was also the Lawrence County School Superintendent for one year. -- Jim Ovendorf

CAUDILL, CAUDLE, CORDLE, CORDIAL


I have been researching the name changes in this family for over 25 years and here is how it appears to be..... In VA and NC and se KY the spelling is Caudill. From 3 sources one a very old man who lived with the Caudill's on Raccoon near Blain named Tommy Hackney was that Grandpa Billy Cordle who is William Caudill in NC where he was born abt 1802 to Jereamah Caudill and Sarah Jane Adama; he used to go on cattle drives from the Wilkes Co NC area to the Clinch River area in VA namely Wheeler's Ford some of his Adams, Caudill and Holbrook relatives also lived in that area and others from Wilkes Co NC. It seems he met a girl Jane Wheeler who it appears he developed an affection for; at home in Wilkes he found out that due to NC laws at that time the farm went to
the eldest son which he wasn't. He had some type of falling out with his father and vowed to move to eastern KY and change the spelling of the name and start a new branch of the family. About this time the Wheelers Adams Holbrooks and others decided to move from VA and some from NC to NE KY and William went with them or followed Jane there as some said. His first land transaction in 1823 was to William 'Cordle' thus the name change started later spellings were Cordial and others. William settled on Racoon that emptied into Hood creek. In the mid 1850's it is said you could go up Raccoon through the various Cordial cabins over the ridge where other Cordial's lived on Brushy Creek like a large community of Cordial's of course William had about 19 children and each of them had 8 to 21 children so there were a lot of them <grin>. The town or Cordell
formed later there on Brushy. Well in the 1880's my greatgrandfather Jessie Jame Cordial, son of the preacher Jeremiah, and a few brothers and half brothers and some cousins found out the original name was spelled 'Caudill' so they changed theirs to that spelling and its argued to this day which is right. I remember visiting in Lawrance with my grandfather in the late 1950's and him arguing with cousins who still spelled it as Cordle (sometime or other it went from Cordial to Cordle again) about who was right. The facts are that at least 95% of the Caudill's and Cordle's in Lawrence and northern Johnson Co's come from
this one man Grandpa Billy who it appears followed his true love to that area and married her.

Tommy Hackney lived his whole life high on a hill on Raccoon Rd just off Hood Rd as his father and grandfather did. He told me he knew all the Caudill's He rembered that old Grandpa Billy had not been baptized he was in his 90's so it would have been about 1895; they carried him down to the branch in a blanket and baptized him. I dont know why he waited that long as his son Jeremiah was a long time Baptist minister in that area and had died by then. Could be Grandpa Billy forgot weather he was baptized or not so wanted to be sure.

I hope this helps everyone who have questioned the origins of the name of course in Lawrence they pronounce Caudill as Cawdle which further compicates those who are researching there but are from other parts of the country who mostly pronounce it as Ca dill.

Cecil Akers lists his name as Levi J. "Elljay" and Enoch. There is no definate answer to Elljay Lester's real name. I knew him and everybody called him Jay but his son told me his parents named him L. J.. He said the army demanded a name so he used Ell Jay. In a genealogy by Gerland Hay, he said there was a Levi J. and an Enoch J. Neither of the birthdates he gave were the right dates.
