Notes for Avrill Robert Jimison:
Avrill Robert Jimison lived in Itasca, Texas. He was a member of the Itasca Presbyterian Church and was a retired plumber at the time of his death. His Social Security Number was 449-28-3548.
When I was a boy I spent time during the summer with my grandparents, Avrill Robert Jimison and Frances Geneva Jimison. My grandfather was a plumber.Often I would get up early in the morning to the smell of bacon and eggs frying in a pan.I would get up, get dressed and go to work with grandpa. He would drive his old Chevy truck very slowly. All of the roads in Itasca, Texas seemed to be gravel. We would see men walking by the side of the road and grandpa would wave at everyone. He knew everybody.I remember us going to the cotton gin to do some plumbing work.My main memory is watching him dig a hole.Sometime during the day we stopped and went inside the mill building. They had a rattlesnake in a glass jar.At lunch grandpa and I would go to the store and get some cheese, saltine crackers and a quart of milk to share. When we were finished I would get an RC Cola or a push up ice cream. One of my fondest memories of grandpa happened on one of our outings in his old truck. We went into Itasca and drove down to the railroad tracks.Grandpa backed the truck up next to a stack of railroad ties.He told me a story about the city marshall back in the old days.He said that each evening after dinner, the marshall would get his gun and go out and do a clockwise circuit of the town.Always clockwise. On this evening he caught several men burglarizing a business. The men were from Dallas and they were sent to prison for their crime. After they got out of prison, they went back to Itasca to get their revenge on the marshall. They went to the railroad tracks and hid behind a stack of railroad ties. They knew that the marshall always walked the town clockwise and they were waitinig to ambush him.As usual, after dinner, the marshall went for his walk around town. For some reason on this one evening he decided to walk the town counter clockwise. As he approached the railroad tracks he saw and recognized the men hiding in ambush behind the railroad ties. The marshall drew his gun and began firing. He caught the men by suprise and even shot some of the men.Unfortunately, the marshall shot all of his bullets and could not reload. He was shot and killed by the leader of the gang.At the end of the story my grandfather got out of the truck. He and I walked up to the railroad tracks and the stack of railroad ties.He pointed at the ties and I looked closer to see that the ties were riddled with what looked like bullet holes.Long after grandpa was dead and gone.I took my son Steven to Itasca and we drove down and parked by the railroad tracks.I told him the same story and thought about that day a long time ago with my grandfather.Steven listened to the story and the look on his face told me that he found it just as exciting as I did so long ago.As I told the story I remembered my grandfather and how much I missed him.
