Notes for Richard (Devil Dick) Nelson Whitt:
The Legend of Richard "Devil Dick" Whitt......by Lucy Green White, a descendant of Hezekiah and Rachel Whitt.
Richard Whitt was a strong man. It took strength to be a good blacksmith and this is just what he was, a good blacksmith. He owned his own shop in Lee County, Virginia. Richard was known far and near as a fighter and he wasn't afraid of any man. In fact it didn't take much to start a fight with him and he was always known to come out the winner. It is told when Richard left his home in Lee County, Virginia he left rather hurriedly. He was engaged in a fight with several people and the odds were against him, as far as the others could see.Not wanting to hurt them he decided he would give up. But they didn't. Hands full of rocks and gravel Kept passing back and forth between them and Richard having to retreat bit by bit to keep distance between them. Thinking the had the strongest man in the county at their mercy, his opponents suddenly moved in on him and fists started flying. Soon there was a half dozen or more knocked unconscious and the other had flown from fear. It was happenings like this that gave Richard Whitt the name of "Devil Dick"and as a result of this last fight in Lee County he made the decision to come to Kentucky. Relatives tell he didn't even go home after the fight, but was on his way to Kentucky minutes afterward with a family and a blacksmith shop, which does"t seem likely. Although descendants tell me Richard died in Virginia, records prove otherwise. The following record was given to me from records at Frankfort, Kentucky. Richard Whitt, age 64 died September 2, 1855, born in Virginia. Died in Carter County, Kentucky. Parents were Hezekiah and Rachel Whitt. That Richard went back to Virginia for a visit, I do not doubt. It is said that John Bunyon went with him and before leaving home, Richard hung his straw hat on a peg and told Rebecca to let it hang there until he came home. While in Virginia he worked in the blacksmith shop he had formerly owned. While putting shoes on a horse, he became very tired and called for Bunyon to bring him a drink of water. His son went to the spring and dipped up a gourd of water, which Richard drank to the last drop. Relatives think he died as soon as he drank the water. He was buried in Virginia and never got home to take his hat off the peg.

+ | 793 | ii. | Edmund (Ned) Whitt, born November 14, 1825 in Lee County, Virginia; died October 18, 1900 in Elliott County, Kentucky. | |
