Notes for Grover DeMasters Whitt:
Information from Mary Whitt Brley and Jessie Whitt Hall: Dad was very tall (6 ft.), lean, smoking and drinking all of his life. Dad was very charismatic, liked by everyone. He was not accepted by our grandmother, Jessie M. Cox, our mother's mother. We felt it was because she felt that dad was not "good enough" for mom. Dad's schooling stopped in his sophomore year. Dad served his country during World War I, from 1917-1919, Sgt. "C" Company, 23rd Eng, A.E., France, working on the railroad. He left Brest France on 6-2-1919. Dad worked as an engineer for Associated Oil Company in the Fresno office for 25 years. It was during this time that he became involved with one of the secretaries in the office, Gertrude Irene Rust. It was during this same time period that mother decided to have her heavy breasts removed surgically. Although she survived the actual surgery, and went home, within several days she became very ill and returned to the hospital, and passed away. This was devastating to us. Within 2 weeks, dad had married Gertrude, which alienated him and us from our grandmother's side of the family. Because of his relationship with Gertrude, dad lost his position at the oil company. Dad was our champion throughout his lifetime. He always made sure that we had a place to live and food. There were some very rough times, but we believe those times helped shape our lives. He was very good with his hands and became a very fine carpenter and builder.
