Mrs. Mary Belle RICE MCDONALD

 

Mrs. Mary Belle (RICE) MCDONALD, 88 of 1203 Linden av., died in her home at 5:30 p.m. Monday where she had been in failing health for several years and critically ill seven weeks. She was born in Springfield on Feb. 27, 1856, the daughter of Alonzo and Mary AULT RICE, who were among the pioneer settlers of Clark County and for whom RICE st. in Springfield in named. Mrs. MCDONALD had spent her entire life in Springfield except for 19 years when she lived in St. Marys. She was the widow of Wesley MCDONALD who died in Springfield in 1925. Two sons also preceded her in death. Mrs MCDONALD was a member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Arthur FOLEY of Springfield; one step-daughter, Mrs. Bertha FOLEY of Canon City, Colo.; two granddaughters and one great grand-daughter.

EDWARD H. RICE DIES AT AGE 80

 

Illness of Two Years Proves Fatal To Man

 

Edward Harrison RICE, 80, died at 11:10 p.m. Saturday at the home of his grandson, Wesley POLAND, 643 Selma rd.  Mr. Rice, who was retired, had been ill for two years.

 

He is survived by a sister, Miss Myra RICE of this city, and seven grandchildren.

 

Mr. RICE was born in Clark County, the son of Harrison and Amelia RICE, pioneer residents.

 

The body was removed to the Littleton funeral home.

 

NOTE:  This was Alonzo Rice’s nephew.  Edward’s father, Harrison Rice was Alonzo’s brother.

PEARL O. RICE

 

Pearl O. RICE, 72, of 427 E. Grand av., died in City Hospital at 8:45 p.m. Sunday following a week's serious illness.

 

He was born in Springfield on July 20, 1885 and had been a lifelong resident here.  His parents were Horace and Cora Rice.

 

Mr. Rice was a member of the First Baptist Church, Anthony Lodge, No. 455, F. and A. M. and the Springfield Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons.

 

He had been employed by the Robbins and Myers Co. for 21 years, by the Springfield Metallic Casket Co. for 13 years and by the Springfield City Engineers Department for four years.  Ill health had forced him to stop his work with that department about two years ago.

 

Survivors include his widow, Cassie LaMARR RICE; a son, Dr. H. Lamarr RICE, assistant to the president and director of development at Denison University in Granville; a brother, Walter E. RICE of Springfield, and a sister, Mrs. Mabel OWEN of Springfield, and three grandchildren.

 

Mr. Rice's body was taken to the Richards Memorial Home for services at 3 p.m. Wednesday; with the Rev. Edgar Drumel of the First Baptist Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.  Friends are requested to omit flowers, but in lieu of flowers, those who desire may make donations to the First Baptist Church in memory of Mr. Rice.

 

NOTE:  A cousin of Alonzo Rice.  Mr.  And Mrs. Pearl O. Rice attended the funeral of Mary Belle Rice McDonald in Springfield 1944.  They also attended the funeral of Fred McDonald, Mary Belle’s son, in 1940 Springfield)

William RICE

 

William RICE, 83, died at 8:30 p.m. Monday at his home, 930 S. Fountain

av.  He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and lived in

Springfield for the past four years.

 

He is survived by one brother, Rev. Charles W. RICE of Cleveland, and one

sister, Miss Lida RICE of Springfield.  The body was removed to the Fox

funeral home.

 

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fox

funeral home, with Rev. L. O. Gordon, pastor of the First Seventh Day

Adventist Church, and Rev. Dr. Charles Ryan Adams, pastor of Covenant

Presbyterian Church, in charge.  Burial will be made at Ferncliff

cemetery.

RICE, COBERLY, MONAHAN, BURNETT

 

William A. RICE

 

William A. RICE, 61, a bookkeeper in the office of The Springfield Gas

Co., since 1902, died Saturday, at 2:40 p.m. at his residence, 2155 S.

Limestone st.  He was born in Springfield and was a member of the Fifth

Lutheran Church; Springfield Lodge, No 536, Loyal Order of Moose;

Champion City Council, No 23, United Commercial Travelers; and the

Brotherhood of the Council.

 

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Devella K. RICE; one daughter, Mrs. Emily

COBERLY; one sister, Miss Mary E. RICE, both of Springfield; and an aunt,

Mrs. M. E. MONAHAN of New Rochelle, N. Y.  Mr. RICE was a nephew of the

late W. R. BURNETT, former mayor of Springfield.

 

The body was removed to the Jackson Funeral Home, and will be returned to

the residence Sunday where friends may view the remains after 1:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the residence, in

charge of the Rev. Webster C. Spayde, pastor of the Fifth Lutheran

Church.  Burial will be made in Ferncliff Cemetery.

RICE, GOWDY, MEIGHEN

 

William Elmer RICE

 

William Elmer RICE, 90, of 1210 Clifton av., died in City Hospital at

8:30 a.m. Sunday. He was a retired farmer.

 

Born near Pitchin, he was the son of William and Matilda GOWDY RICE.  He

had lived in Springfield for the past 35 years.

 

Surviving are the widow, Rilla; two sons, Frederick Ray of Springfield,

and Ralph of West Mansfield; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy MEIGHEN of

Springfield; a brother, Claude of Springfield, Route 5; 11 grandchildren

and 20 great grandchildren.

 

Friends may call at the Richards Memorial Home Monday evening until time

of services there at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.
