Fred W. McDonald was born 14 Sep 1884 to Wesley and Mary Belle Rice McDonald. Mary Belle was the daughter of Alonzo Rice, the granddaughter of Edward and Lucy Poole Rice and Adam and Maria Drew Alt.
Fred
married Ethel Bell, b. 1890, the daughter of William Bell, in Springfield,
Ohio. Ethel died of a prolonged illness
04 Feb 1939. Fred was demolished and
sank into a deep depression. His
mother, Mary Belle Rice McDonald, did everything she could to take care of
Fred, eventually moving in with him to take care of him. Despite her loving care, Fred McDonald was
found dead outside of a bar in Springfield, Ohio, having ingested some kind of
poison. The Coroner, a friend of the
family, managed to keep this information out of the records. Fred’s obit states that he “died enroute to
the hospital in an ambulance”. Fred and
Ethel are buried in the Alonzo Rice Family Plot with his mother & father,
Mary Bell Rice McDonald and Wesley McDonald.
The
Memorial Record containing the
signatures of those attending the funeral has been transcribed below, with
notes on the known relatives. Mary
Belle Rice McDonald and Fred’s sister, Flora Belle McDonald Foley and Arthur Foley, Flora Belle’s husband, were
the only immediate family survivors.
