From "20th Century History of Springfield and Clark County" by Wm. Rockel(pub 1907) pg 298:

The German Baptist Church was organized as early as 1816 by Elder Christian Frantz, the first elder of this locality.  This church is located south of Northampton.  The congregation is in a large and flourishing condition.  It is known as a Dunkard organization.  Aaron Frantz is the present pastor.

Sometime about 1885 there was a division in this church and the conservatives built a church in the southeast part of the township.  Henry Dresher, James Hansborough, David Leatherman, et al., were instrumental in this movement.  Jacob Sandy and Louis Pfeiffer are ministers."

The Pietists (also called "Dunkards") were an "Anabaptist" group, meaning they did not believe in infant baptism (other Anabaptist groups include the modern Baptists and the various Mennonite churches).

Obituary of John W. Leatherman

Springfield Daily News, Friday, Mar 25, 1938, pg 26

LEATHERMAN

John W. LEATHERMAN, 84-year-old retired farmer, died at 11:05 p.m. Thursday in the home of his son, Otho F. LEATHERMAN, of the Jordan rd., Springfield, Route 2, following a heart attack.   He had been ill for the past two days.

Mr. LEATHERMAN was born on June 26 1853, in Rockford County, W. Va., but had been a resident of Clark County for the past 80 years.  He was a member of the German Baptist Church of North Hampton.

Besides the son in whose home he died, Mr. LEATHERMAN leaves two other sons, Raymond C. of Springfield, and the Rev. I. D. LEATHERMAN of Lanaik, Ill; 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The body was removed to the Littleton funeral home.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Donnels Creek Church of the Brethren, with burial in Myers Cemetery.

(Note:  There is no Rockford County, WV)  The biography of John W. Leatherman clearly states his birthplace as Hampshire Co., WV - "20th Century History Springfield & Clark Co., OH", pg 977:

John W. Leatherman, on of German Township's representative agrculturists, resides on his well cultivated farm of sixty acres, which is situated on the Springfield-Northampton Turnpike Road, about four miles northwest of Springfield.  He was born in Hampshire County, West Virginia, June 26 1853, and is a son of Charles and Catherine (Shoskey)* Leatherman.

The parents of Mr. Leatherman came from West Virginia to Clark County, Ohio, when he was eighteen months old, and settled on a farm about nine miles northeast of Springfield on the old Major Hunt place.  The father rented that farm for two years and then moved to the neighboring one belonging to Nathan Trotter, which he rented for ten years, moving from there to one on the Yellow Springs Turnpike.  This farm belonged to John Perrin, and one year later they moved to a farm two miles north of Clifton, and from there a year afterward to the James Anderson farm, and thence to Dr. Marquart's farm near Osborn, on which they lived for eight years.  Their next move was to the John Harris farm, near Dayton, where the mother died.  The father and sons had worked the various farms up to this time, but from that time on up to the time of his marrige, John W. Leatherman worked by the month.  After that event he rented a farm in Pike Township, on which he lived for five years, and in 1886 he bought and moved on to his present farm, which he has continued to improve up to the time of this writing.  He has done a large amount of tiling and fencing and, some clearing, and has remodeled the residence, and in 1904 he built a new barn, the dimensions of which are 40 by 50 feet.  He has taken an interest in his surroundings, and his improvments each year added value to his place.

In 1881 Mr. Leatherman married Mary E. Dresher, a daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (Siefreid) Dresher, who was born south of Springfield, in Clark County.  Their oldest child died in infancy.  The survivors all are at home, namely:  Otho, Rolland, and Raymond, twins, and Irven.  Mr. and Mrs. Leatherman are members of the German Baptist Church.

*Note:  Shoskey - should be Shockey.

Notes for CHARLES W. FOLEY:

From Barbara Lou Foley Martin's Memoirs speaking of her Paternal Grandfather,Ch arles Foley, was a preacher.  His forebearers emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland and settled in West Virginia, where a schism developed in religious beliefs. Half the Foleys stayed in west Virginia, Catholics.  The other half (our half, that is) traveled to Ohio, where Charles Foley became a Baptist preacher.  He attended Moody Bible School (now College, I think) in Minnesota and later was a member of the faculty there.  He was not a highly educated man, but apparently was regarded with some esteem as a man of the cloth.  They all lived, variously , in Ohio, Minnesota and, lastly, North Dakota.

NOTE (by Janie Martin Whitty).  Barbara Lou was incorrect that Charles Foley "was not a highly educated man" as his obituary lists him as Rev. Dr. Charles W. Foley.

From Obituary of Charles W. Foley , published Springfield News, Sunday November 7:  Burial was made in Minneapolis, Minn. (See scrapbook for full copy).

Notes for ARTHUR LESTER FOLEY:

Arthur is buried in the Foley Family Pot, Lot 119, Section L at Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield, Ohio.  Next to him are Flora Belle (marked Flo B. at her insistence - she hated Flora Belle), his wife, and their first child, Anna Belle in an unmarked Grave just beside Flora Belle.  Their second child, Barbara Lou Foley Martin, was cremated at Pensacola, Florida.

From the Memoirs of Barabara Lou:  In 1905, Arthur had returned to Springfield Ohio from North Dakota with his Uncle Gard Foley, a pharmacist, when he was 16.  Arthur was living with his grandmother in Springfield, OH when he met Flora Belle (Flo).  Later, as a self -supporting young man working for the telephone company.  Later, still, he was a shoe salesman, then worked for the Ohio Bell Telephone Company and finally settled in at Crowell-Collier Publishing company where he worked as an accountant for 40-odd years.  He only saw his parents twice after he left North Dakota - once when Barbara was born and they visited Springfield, and again in 1933 when Art, Flo and Barbara Lou went to the Chicago World's Fair and on to Mound, Minnesota, for Barbara Lou to meet her grandparents.

Notes for FLORA BELLE (FLO) MCDONALD:

The memoirs of Barbara Lou Foley Martin, her daughter, describe Flo best, "Her youthful photos show her to be a beauty, tall, full-bosomed, brown hair, and very stylishly dressed (probably because her mother was a seamstress and a milliner).  She was once engaged to millionaire, Tom Schoonauer.

From my many recollections of conversations with her friends in St. Marys, Ohio, in my very young years, she must have been very popular, with many beaus and many girlfriend s.  A very good ice skater and excellent dancer, she never wanted for dates. Later, you may remember, she was an avid poker player and fanatically interested in sports - football, boxing, golf - but hated to watch basketball.  Enjoyed a good time, and at Christmas, was as expectant and excited as any little kid." "She was indeed quite a gal, especially before the infirmities of age caught up with her.

Notes for ANNABEL FOLEY:

Anna Belle, the first child or Arthur and Flo Foley lived only three weeks.  Th e cause of her death was always told as "blue baby"

A newspaper article published in the Springfield News Oct, 1915 described the extreme medical procedures to save her life.

October, 1915.  Springfield News Article

BABY'S LIFE

   -----------

Saved By Difficult Operation by Physicians

   -----------

At City Hospital - Blood Taken From Father and Delicate Treatment is Given Little One

   ----------

(Note by Janie Martin Whitty:  This baby died anyway, on November 11, 1915 only a couple of weeks later)

Members of the medical profession in Springfield are watching with no little interest the case of the little week-old daughter of Arthur Foley, 537 Rose  street, whose life is believed to have been saved by a treatment bearing some resemblance to transfusion of blood , but more delicate and much more rarely administered.

The child appeared wholly normal until about a day after birth, when she showed seepage of blood from the intestines, stomach, and all other mucous surfaces of the body, diagnosed as "melaena neonatorium".  It was apparent the child would have but a short time to live unless extraordinary procedure was adopted.

Blood was taken from the child's father, and subjected to centrifugal force by which the serum was separated.  This serum has been injected in quantities of ten cubic centimeters, three times daily, beneath the child's skin.  Indications yesterday, according to friends of the family, were that the child had been saved, as there had been no bleeding for about forty hours.

This case, believed to be the first of its kind in the city, is said to have been handled by the most advanced treatment possible under the circumstances, as transfusion of blood directly, or use of any serum other than that of the baby's father would have involved dangers which were avoided by the means used.

The case was handled wholly by local members of the profession.  Both Mr. Foley and the baby are at the city hospital.
