Notes for CHARLES C. EVANS:
The next attachment ismy mother's brother, Charles. He married Ella and they could not have children,so they adopted a boy they called Everett. The boy was born out of wedlock. I believe he came from the Springfield area. They moved to Californianear San Diego where Charlie worked on communications for the Railroad. In 1917Ella died in the flu epidemic leaving Charlie with a boy to care for, probablyaround 8 or 9 years old (not sure). Charlie met Edna whose husband had beenshot and she was left with a little girl, Lorraine. Charlie was really in love with her, but it is felt Edna foundthis marriage a necessity. Charlie did everything for her and worked so hard toprovide her with the niceties of life. She didn't like Everett and wantedCharlie to give the child up to his mother who had married and had a husbandwilling to accept the child. I was very painful for Charlie, but in the longrun was a blessing. Everett became adoctor and had a happy life with his parents, but was very bitter about hisearly life. My mother wrote to him andhe wrote back he did not wish to have contact with his former family. Charlieand Edna had two boys, Leroy and Charles. When Leroy was ten (1930) Edna found another lover and made Charliecompletely broken. He had severalmental breakdowns and she put in in a sanitarium. My grandparents went to California and brought back. His mind gotfurther and further from reality until he had completely forgotten his past. Hecontinued to draw and enjoyed children, but it broke my grandmother's heart. After Grandmother died, grandpa would spend the winters with us in Newport. Mother would drive out to get them andreturn them to Bellaire in the Spring. After grandpa died, my folks carried forCharlie and then Mother alone cared for him. He wasn't much trouble, justquietly crazy. Anyhow that's Charles sad story. The saddest thing for me was that Edna told her children thattheir father had died. (He had also signed over all their property and custodyof the children to her). It was years later Leroy found out his dad was aliveand what his mother had done. He hadmany long distance calls from California to my mother and with me after hisfather died. I haven't contacted him in quite a few years now. I should dothat. Anyway, I've attached a picture of Charlie as a young man.

9. HENRY M.3 EVANS (CHARLES S.2, ISAAC1)37,38 was born 09 Nov 1872 in North Lewisburg, OH39,40, anddied 13 May 193641,42. He married LENA BELLE SHROADES43,44 02Nov 1893 in Springfield, Clark Co., OH45, daughter of GEORGE SHROADES and ANNA FEASTER.
Notes for HENRY M. EVANS:
From the Memoirs ofBarbara Lou Foley Martin: Your greatgrandad (Henry) was a baker, concessionaire, theater opertor, poolroomoperator, barber - none of which ever kept him for doing what he loved best -hunting and fishing. When the seasonwas in, he'd simply hang a sign on the door, close the door firmly, and gohunting or fishing. Sometimes, insteadof closing the bakery, he'd leave Greatgrandmother Evans in charge.
Henry taught your dad(speaking of Jack Allen Martin, his grandson) to hunt, fish, trap muskrat andother little furry things (another of his vocations), drive a car (at about age13), and, in my opinion, to enjoy his vocation and his life to the fullestwithout ever letting things get too complicated.

Her livingroom was full ofcut glass pieces - must've been hundreds. She had the coolest antique furniture and old lamps - there was alwayssomething new to discover. And mealswere a big deal at the Evans. We alwayshad a huge county breakfast when we spent the night with her.

He took over the barbering business and thepoolroom, but he also managed to "put by" a good bit, and was alwaysgood for a loan.
