Notes for AMOS UNDERWOOD:

Amos was asthmatic and enjoyed going to Bellaire, MI for his health. It was a good hunting and fishing area.  He was a carpenter and mason by trade and built three houses in Bellaire, two of which are still standing in 1998 when this is being noted.  One he lived in and the other two he built for  two of his sisters, but they never settled there. There should be much more information in the Bellaire records.                                                                         MCS

Notes for HENRY M. EVANS:

From the Memoirs of Barbara Lou Foley Martin:  Your great grandad (Henry) was a baker, concessionaire, theater opertor, poolroom operator, barber - none of which ever kept him for doing what he loved best - hunting and fishing.  When the season was in, he'd simply hang a sign on the door, close the door firmly, and go hunting or fishing.  Sometimes, instead of closing the bakery, he'd leave Greatgrandmother Evans in charge.

Henry taught your dad (speaking of Jack Allen Martin, his grandson) to hunt, fish, trap muskrat and other little furry things (another of his vocations), drive a car (at about age 13), and, in my opinion, to enjoy his vocation and his life to the fullest without ever letting things get too complicated.

Henry and family were living in Springfield at 40 N. Mechanic. Henry was a grocer.  Samuel Feaster was living with them, age 43, born 1857 listed as father in law, but the age isn't right.....  Lena's maiden name was Shroades and her mother Anna's maiden name was Feaster.  So this may have been an Uncle of Lena's, not her father.  Her father was George T. Shroades (the Henry Evans family was living with him in 1910).  Lena's DOB is listed as Feb 1872 and Henry's DOB Nov 1874.  Harry was age 3, born Jan 1897 and Corrinne was age 01, born Dec. 1898

Notes for LENA BELLE SHROADES:

From the Memoirs of Barbara Lou Martin Foley, (speaking of Lena Belle Schrodes Evans):

Your greatgrandmother Lena was too busy keeping food on the table and the wolf from the door to spend a lot of time on refinement and culture - but nonetheless a great lady herself.  She died the year that Suzy (Martin) was born - 1956.

From the memories of her greatgranddaughter, Jane Ellen Martin Whitty:

I have a vague memory of Greatgrandmother Evans, who was living with my Uncle Floyd and Aunt Madge in Springfield, OH.  She sat in a needlepoint rocking chair - she was very old and an invalid.

..............................

I believe that Lena was living with her grandmother, Mary Feaster, in Springfield OH in 1891.  I believe Susanna Shroades was her sister.

Notes for CHARLES C. EVANS:

The next attachment is my mother's brother, Charles. He married Ella and they could not have children, so they adopted a boy they called Everett.  The boy was born out of wedlock.  I believe he came from the Springfield area. They moved to California near San Diego where Charlie worked on communications for the Railroad. In 1917 Ella died in the flu epidemic leaving Charlie with a boy to care for, probably around 8 or 9 years old (not sure). Charlie met Edna whose husband had been shot and she was left with a little girl, Lorraine.  Charlie was really in love with her, but it is felt Edna found this marriage a necessity. Charlie did everything for her and worked so hard to provide her with the niceties of life. She didn't like Everett and wanted Charlie to give the child up to his mother who had married and had a husband willing to accept the child. I was very painful for Charlie, but in the long run was a blessing.  Everett became a doctor and had a happy life with his parents, but was very bitter about his early life.  My mother wrote to him and he wrote back he did not wish to have contact with his former family. Charlie and Edna had two boys, Leroy and Charles.  When Leroy was ten (1930) Edna found another lover and made Charlie completely broken.  He had several mental breakdowns and she put in in a sanitarium.  My grandparents went to California and brought back. His mind got further and further from reality until he had completely forgotten his past. He continued to draw and enjoyed children, but it broke my grandmother's heart. After Grandmother died, grandpa would spend the winters with us in Newport.  Mother would drive out to get them and return them to Bellaire in the Spring. After grandpa died, my folks carried for Charlie and then Mother alone cared for him. He wasn't much trouble, just quietly crazy. Anyhow that's Charles sad story.  The saddest thing for me was that Edna told her children that their father had died. (He had also signed over all their property and custody of the children to her). It was years later Leroy found out his dad was alive and what his mother had done.  He had many long distance calls from California to my mother and with me after his father died. I haven't contacted him in quite a few years now. I should do that. Anyway, I've attached a picture of Charlie as a young man.

THE OBITUARY OF JACK A. MARTIN:

Published in the Springfield News, Springfield, OH and the Pensacola News Journal, Pensacola, FL

Jack A. Martin

Jack A. Martin, Lt. Cmdr. USNR, Retired, 78, of Pensacola, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1999 after a brief illness. He was born in Springfield, Ohio, the only son of Raymond B. and Corrinne Martin. He was the president of his senior class at Springfield High School, and was an active lifetime member of the school's alumni association. A champion swimmer, he attended Ohio State University, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Later, he returned to OSU, earning a  Master's Degree in Physical Education to augment his 38-year water survival and safety career in military and government service.

He served his country in WWII and during the Korean conflict. He was wounded in the amphibious invasion of  Layte in 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon his return to the U.S from WWII in 1945, he married the love of his life, Barbara Lou Foley Martin, who preceded him in death in 1996.

From 1950-1953, he was the Officer in Charge of the Pensacola Naval Aviation Schools Command's Swim Division. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and employed as a civil servant, serving as a Water Survival Instructor at Naval Aviation Schools Command, NAS Pensacola. Prior to his retirement in 1980, he was promoted to Water Survival Standardization Officer. During his career with Schools Command, he trained 150,000 flight students in water survival, as well as 64 Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo astronauts. He was rewarded for his efforts by the countless number of pilots whose lives were saved by the techniques they learned from Jack Martin at NAS Pensacola Training Tanks I and II. His methods were so highly regarded, it was often said, "He could teach a rock to swim."

During his career, Martin conceived and implemented the Naval Survival Swim Syllabus for flight surgeons and was an instrumental member of the Fleet Project Team responsible for the development of the  Multi-Place Ditching Trainer, the "Dilbert Dunker," a simulator still used to train pilots to survive crashes in water. He was appointed by the governor to the Florida Boating Advisory Committee, and served as a volunteer with the Northwest Florida Water Safety Council and the Bream Fishermans' Association.

GrandUncle Floyd was our favorite.  I remember going to visit he and Madge a lot whenever we went to Springfield to see our Grandparents Mike & Corrinne Martin.  We always looked forward to our visits to their farm way out in the country.  I have a vague memory of visiting Floyd's barbershop and recollect the old fashioned barber pole out front.  Floyd had a wonderful smile and everyone loved him!  JMW

Aunt Madge was also our favorite GrandAunt.  She, like Floyd, was a lot of fun...had a great sense of humor and we loved to visit them.  I remember that she collected lots of antiques.  Her livingroom was full of cut glass pieces - must've been hundreds.  She had the coolest antique furniture and old lamps - there was always something new to discover.  And meals were a big deal at the Evans.  We always had a huge county breakfast when we spent the night with her.
