Notes for J. WILLIAM FOLEY:
The parentage of J.William Foley was obtained from the IGI, patron submitted information by aDorothy Hollingsworth whose files tend to agree with this researcher, however, there was no J. William Foley listed on the 1850 Census with the Jasper Foleyfamily. The 1840 Census for Jaspershows 2 males and 3 females. The twomales are already accounted for in Jasper and Frederick.
This researcherbelieves that the J. William Foley listed here is the child of one of the otherFoleys in Clark County. I am leavingthis name on this record so that further investigation can be made.

From "20th CenturyHistory of Springfield and Clark County" by Wm. Rockel(pub 1907) pg 298:
The German BaptistChurch was organized as early as 1816 by Elder Christian Frantz, the firstelder of this locality. This church islocated south of Northampton. Thecongregation is in a large and flourishing condition. It is known as a Dunkard organization. Aaron Frantz is the present pastor.
Sometime about 1885there was a division in this church and the conservatives built a church in thesoutheast part of the township. HenryDresher, James Hansborough, David Leatherman, et al., were instrumental in thismovement. Jacob Sandy and Louis Pfeifferare ministers."
The Pietists (alsocalled "Dunkards") were an "Anabaptist" group, meaning theydid not believe in infant baptism (other Anabaptist groups include the modernBaptists and the various Mennonite churches).

Pg 977
John W. Leatherman, onof German Township's representative agrculturists, resides on his wellcultivated farm of sixty acres, which is situated on theSpringfield-Northampton Turnpike Road, about four miles northwest ofSpringfield. He was born in HampshireCounty, West Virginia, June 26 1853, and is a son of Charles and Catherine(Shoskey)* Leatherman.
The parents of Mr.Leatherman came from West Virginia to Clark County, Ohio, when he was eighteenmonths old, and settled on a farm about nine miles northeast of Springfield onthe old Major Hunt place. The father rentedthat farm for two years and then moved to the neighboring one belonging toNathan Trotter, which he rented for ten years, moving from there to one on theYellow Springs Turnpike. This farmbelonged to John Perrin, and one year later they moved to a farm two milesnorth of Clifton, and from there a year afterward to the James Anderson farm, and thence to Dr. Marquart's farm near Osborn, on which they lived for eightyears. Their next move was to the JohnHarris farm, near Dayton, where the mother died. The father and sons had worked the various farms up to this time, but from that time on up to the time of his marrige, John W. Leatherman workedby the month. After that event herented a farm in Pike Township, on which he lived for five years, and in 1886he bought and moved on to his present farm, which he has continued to improveup to the time of this writing. He hasdone a large amount of tiling and fencing and, some clearing, and has remodeledthe residence, and in 1904 he built a new barn, the dimensions of which are 40by 50 feet. He has taken an interest inhis surroundings, and his improvments each year added value to his place.
In 1881 Mr. Leathermanmarried Mary E. Dresher, a daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (Siefreid)Dresher, who was born south of Springfield, in Clark County. Their oldest child died in infancy. The survivors all are at home, namely: Otho, Rolland, and Raymond, twins, and Irven. Mr. and Mrs. Leatherman are members of theGerman Baptist Church.

Notes for CHARLES W. FOLEY:
From Barbara Lou FoleyMartin's Memoirs speaking of her Paternal Grandfather,Ch arles Foley, was apreacher. His forebearers emigrated tothe U.S. from Ireland and settled in West Virginia, where a schism developed inreligious beliefs. Half the Foleys stayed in west Virginia, Catholics. The other half (our half, that is) traveledto Ohio, where Charles Foley became a Baptist preacher. He attended Moody Bible School (now College,I think) in Minnesota and later was a member of the faculty there. He was not a highly educated man, butapparently was regarded with some esteem as a man of the cloth. They all lived, variously , in Ohio,Minnesota and, lastly, North Dakota.
NOTE (by Janie MartinWhitty). Barbara Lou was mistaken thatCharles Foley "was not a highly educated man" as his obituary listshim as Rev. Dr. Charles W. Foley.
From Obituary ofCharles W. Foley , published Springfield News, Sunday November 7: Burial was made in Minneapolis, Minn. (Seescrapbook for full copy).
According to the 1880Census, Charles, age 17, was attending school. The family was living in Moorefield Twp, Clark Co., OH

Notes for FLORA BELLE (FLO) MCDONALD:
The memoirs of BarbaraLou Foley Martin, her daughter, describe Flo best, "Her youthful photosshow her to be a beauty, tall, full-bosomed, brown hair, and very stylishlydressed (probably because her mother was a seamstress and a milliner). She was once engaged to millionaire, TomSchoonauer.
From my manyrecollections of conversations with her friends in St. Marys, Ohio, in my veryyoung years, she must have been very popular, with many beaus and manygirlfriend s. A very good ice skaterand excellent dancer, she never wanted for dates. Later, you may remember, shewas an avid poker player and fanatically interested in sports - football, boxing, golf - but hated to watch basketball. Enjoyed a good time, and at Christmas, was as expectant and excited asany little kid." "She was indeed quite a gal, especially before theinfirmities of age caught up with her.
