The Alt (or Ault) brothers in the Civil War, enlisted Sept. 1861 at Springfield, OH in the 44th OVI. Adam, age 22, was killed in action at Lewisburg, WV May 23, 1862. His brother James and Daniel re-enlisted in 1864 when the 44th OVI was converted to a cavalry regiment, the 8th OVC. James died in Jan 23, 1865 of menningitis, leaving a widow, Catherine, but no living children. He is buried at the Mud Run Cemetery, Mad River Twp, Clark Co., Ohio. Daniel survived the war and married Ellen Hinkle and they had four sons. Daniel died in 1920. His widow just a few days after. The Alt brothers were the children of Adam Alt and Maria Drew, early settlers of Clark County from Maryland.
