Martin …….Harshman Blvd., has retired as a swimming (instructor) at the Naval Aviation Schools Command ……Pensacola, Fla. Martin, whose instruction centered on water survival techniques, worked from 1958 to 1964 in training United States astronauts, including Virgil “Gus” Grissom, a Mercury astronaut who inadvertently hit an explosive charge which blew the hatch off his capsule after plunging into the ocean following his first space shot. Grissom, forced to leave his capsule and swim for safety as it quickly sank below the surface later credited Martin’s training program with saving his life.
