Keith White & Elly Hopton Family Home Page.
We are currently researching the WHITEs, ancestors of our daughter, Tallis, and their families. They lived in or around the Deptford area, London. Our furthest delve has uncovered (not literally) Elisha WHITE, who was born, we think in St. Marylebone in 1790. (Age: 51 in 1841 census), St Marylebone comes from a tenuous link in the IGI. We find him marrying Mary THORNTON in 1814 in St. Mary's, Portsea, Portsmouth, England. At the time he was a pastrycook. He left Portsmouth sometime after 1817 (after the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and by degrees moving to Deptford (following the fleet?), where he owned a bakery in Flagon Row, in 1841. Neither of them are in Deptford in the 1851 census, as far as we are aware, although a number of his offspring are still around at that time. One of his sons, Edward Thornton WHITE became registrar at St. Paul,s, Deptford, and gave his son, Sidney Elisha WHITE permission to marry on Christmas Day (by the way). Another two generations of WHITEs were registrars in the area, which makes it doubly frustrating that we cannot find Elisha's birth details. I would welcome any correspondence, but be warned, I am very slow to reply (pressure of work). I have pasted the family tree, containing nearly 200 related names into the WFT, and am very willing to share my information. I also have a mass of named photographs, which I have yet to catalogue thoroughly. Family tradition has it that my wife, Elayne HOPTON is descended from Sir Ralph HOPTON, who did a lot for the Royalist cause in the English Civil War. Thank you for reading. | Keith White & Elly Hopton Family Home Page. Updated September 5, 2000 |
