Joseph Samuel Whitesel (b. January 14, 1840, d. September 30, 1870)

Joseph Samuel served in the Confederate Army as a Private in Company E, 54 Reg's VirginiaInfantry from September 10, 1861 to January 1, 1862. Then served same company as aSergeant from July to December 31, 1863. he was taken prisoner at Chickamauge in November26,1863. He was sent to a military prison at Louisville, Kentucky on December 11,1853 andthen to Rock Island, Illinois on December 14,1863.
On October 6,1864 he enlisted in the Company G, 2 Reg't U.S. Volunteers at Rock Island,Illinois for a period of one year. He was mustared out at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas onNovember 7,1865. He served as a carpenter
He was described as having blue eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion, and was 5 feet 4inches. his burial site is unknown.
His wife, Mary Antoinette Beck, was born in Indiana as per the census record 1880 on January15, 1841 and according to Family bible record she died on April 7,1917.
On the 1880 Virginia Census, Mary Antoinette and children, Alice and Georgie Enos, are livingwith Enos and Susan Whitesel in Augusta County, Middle River District, Virginia. This is 10years after Joseph Samuel's death. She and the Children left Virginia and moved to New Yorkin 1880. They stayed for approximately 17-18 years and about 1897 returned to RockinghamCounty, Virginia.
Mary Antoinette Beck Whitesel is buried at St. Jacob's Cemetery.
