Descendants of William Whiting

26. MARY5 WHITING (SAMUEL4, JOHN3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1)63 was born 24 Nov 1712 in Windham, CT, and died 9 Aug 1736 in Windham, CT (Age 24). She married THOMAS CLAP 23 Nov 1727 in Windham, CT, son of STEPHEN CLAP and TEMPERENCE GORHAM. He was born 26 Jun 1703 in Plymouth, MA, and died 2 Jan 1767 in Windham, CT.

Notes for M
ARY WHITING:
The ninth child of Samuel & Elizabeth, Mary married Reverend Thomas Clap in Windham CT on November 23, 1727. After her father's death in 1725, Thomas, became the minister at Windham, and afterwards elected the president of Yale College. Thomas parents were Stephen and Temperance (Gorham) Clap. (Goodwin pg. 335)

Mary died at age 24, a few weeks after the death of her infant son Saltonstall. During their 8+ years of marriage, Mary & Thomas had 5 children, all born in Windham CT. Three of their children died as infants. The Windham Cemetery lists two of their children's death. Anne's dated 1733, not 1735 as is recorded in numerous documents, and Temperance dated on June 4, 1733 at 2 years of age, not June 4, 1731. We chose to record her death in 1731, because the other Temperance was born in 1732. It was common practice back then to name other siblings after those children who had died. Mary & Thomas's oldest surviving daughter, Mary Clap, would eventually marry David Wooster who died as a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

After Mary's death, Thomas married Mary Haynes (5 Feb 1741). Mary Haynes' previous marriages were:
i. Elisha Lord; 2 May 1723 who died 15 April 1725
ii. Rosewell Saltonstall; 6 April 1727 who died 1 Oct 1738. (Goodwin, pp349-350) Rosewell and Mary Haynes were the parents of Mary Saltonstall who would eventually marry Samuel and Elizabeth's youngest son, Colonel Nathan Whiting.

Notes for C
OL. SAMUEL WHITING:
The twelfth son of Samuel & Elizabeth, Samuel was born in Windham Connecticut, and much like his brothers William and Nathan served in the defense of our country. He fought in both the French and Indian War and the Revolution, serving first as Captain of the 5th Connecticut Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel of the Continental Regiment, and Colonel of the First Battalion of Connecticut Troops. The Revolutionary pension file for Samuel Whiting at the National Archives indicates that he received a disability pension of $15.00 a month. One affidavit states that "during his service in 1777, while overheated by marching and exhausted by fatigue, he caught cold by wading across a river near Norwalk, which resulted in a complication of diseases and the final loss of his right eye." (Register of Connecticut Society Colonial America)

The Windham bicentennial book states "the family of [Reverend] Samuel Whiting was one of the religious militant families of the early town. Its members could pray or fight as occasion demanded." Four of his sons served in the army; three, if not all, as officers. (Goodwin pg. 336)

He married Elizabeth Judson on Sep 14, 1743 and for most of their lives, they lived in Stratford, near Fairfield CT where all of their 11 children were born. Their first son, Samuel attended Yale in 1765 and became a surgeon in the army. Their youngest child, Mary Whiting Judson, moved to Oneida, NY and died there in 1811. Mrs. Elizabeth Whiting died December 5, 1793, followed ten years later by Col. Samuel Whiting who died three months shy of 83 in Stratford.

Notes for C
OL. NATHAN WHITING:
The youngest child born of Samuel & Elizabeth, Nathan was born in Windham CT in May 1724 and graduated from Yale College in 1743. Much like his two brothers Nathan served in the defense of the colonies and rose to the rank of Colonel.

Nathan moved to New Milford, CT where he resided for most of his life and entered military life shortly after graduating from Yale. Extracts taken from the book "Two Centuries of New Milford 1707-1907" gives a little insight into Nathan and his township. "New Milford was, during most of these first fifty years of its existence, a frontier town, a line of guards was established which reached across the country from Woodbury to the New York boundary, and the members of the company had to take turns in patrolling this line. The second company in New Milford was organized in 1744, and both of these companies continued to exist until the Revolution." In 1744 Nathan commanded the Eleventh Company of the Second Regiment in which they responded to a military crises outside New Milford. The first recorded service of the New Milford men beyond their own borders occurred about 1758. The greatest accumulation of men found on the record is a company raised for the French and Indian War in 1759. It was commanded by Captain Whiting and was known as the "Tenth Company of Colonel David Wooster's Third Regiment of Connecticut Levy." Shortly after this excursion, Nathan was elected as a Colonel of the Second Regiment and saw action outside New Milford in 1759 and 1761.

Nathan married Mary Saltonstall in New Haven CT on July 12, 1750. Mary was the daughter of CPT. Roswell Saltonstall, of Branford, Connecticut. Her mother, Mary Haynes, (widow of Elisha Lord,) was the granddaughter of Gov. John Haynes of Hartford. During their 21 years of marriage, Nathan & Mary resided in New Milford and had nine children. Three of those children died as infants. There are conflicting dates concerning their daughter Mary. Majority of the records reviewed has her death listed either in 1761 or 1781, yet she married Elisha Hale in 1782. It is believed Nathan's mother, Elizabeth, moved into their household sometime around 1761/62 and lived with them until her death. After Nathan's death, it is believed Mrs. Mary (Saltonstall) Whiting married Rev. Warham Williams, of Northford, CT., but various records has her death listed for 1771.
