Notes for J
OHN COMER:
John Comer emmigrated from England or Ireland to America before 1830. He had two sons, John C. Comer and Samuel Comer. John C. Comer was our ancestor, while Samuel Comer was the ancestor of the Braxton Bragg Comers of Alabama. In the genealogy of Governor Braxton Bragg Comer of Alabama, the author wrote that the earlier John Comer was the father of John C. Comer and Samuel Comer, and that Samuel Comer was the guardian of his brother's three youngest children, including Daniel. [Email dated 2/17/1997 from Mark Comer attributed to Mrs. Martin Brown of Amber, Pennsylvania]

John Comer (of Virginia) father of John C. Comer & Samuel Comer, emigrated from England or Ireland before 1730.

Died intestate. Children William & Elizabeth chose their own guardian. Children DANIEL, Samuel & Annis were placed under the guardianship of their uncle, Samuel Comer (son of John Comer). Samuel was the ancestor of Gov. B.B. Comer of Alabama.

A court suit in 1766 provides the approximate date of John Comer Sr's 's death and the names of his children and their spouses.
Prince Edward Court Orders #3 (1765-1767) , p. 108, August Court 1766
. It reads:
WILLIAM SAMMOND and ANN, his wife, and THOMAS WARE and SUSANNAH, his wife against ROBERT PEAKE and ELIZABETH, his wife, SAMUEL COMAR, and THOMAS COMAR, sons and heirs of JOHN COMAR deceased............

Ibid, Book # 4 (1767-1770). p. 26, June Court 1767. It reads: A settlement and distribution of the estate of John Comar, deceased, among the several legatees was made and reported by.........Pursuant to an order of Prince Edward August Court 1766, we have made distribution of the slaves belonging to the Estate of John Comar, dec'd . to the several legatees agreeable to the Will of the said Comer, dec'd as follows:
Robert Peake to have.....,
Thomas Ware to have.....,
William Sammond is to have.....,
Samuel Comer is to have.....,
The orphans of John Comer, (Junior), dec'd are to have.....

Thomas Comer who had been one of the parties to the litigation did not share in the distribution of the slaves as provided in the settlement although it is not known why. As the settlement of the estate of John Comer Jr. makes clear, the Ann Sammond above is not a daughter of John Comer Sr., but is, instead, the widow of John Comer Jr, who,in the interval between the death of the junior Comer and the settlement of his estate, had married William Sammond. The settlement also makes it clear that John Sr. predeceased John Jr.
