Find Family

In September of 1995 I started working on discovering where my father's cousins were. Everything I've learned thus far I compiled with about 10% research from me, and 90% contributed genealogical research from family members. I'm no genealogist; I am a compiler of information. Most of the information I have compiled was in small or large chunks from other family members--I just inputted it and now can view it in a comprehensive format. I’m proud to say I found Whitrights all over: in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, West Virginia, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, Montana, and Utah. We’re practically everywhere!
Michael Witterecht is the first-known Whitright to be found in America. It has been theorized he may have come from Wuerttemburg or Alsace-Loraine. He has been found as a baptism sponsor, in land title records, and Revolutionary War records as having lived in Bucks and York Counties in southern Pennsylvania in the 1750s. Michael’s son (Johan) Peter Witterecht moved from York County to Columbiana County in eastern Ohio, sometime between 1802 and 1807, apparently with all of his grown-up children. He, his brother George, and father Michael all fought for Pennsylvania in the Revolutionary War. George has shown up in certain documents as “Whitright,” and Peter’s name on his will in 1813 was “Peter Witterright.” Peter’s son Peter, Jr. started and ended with the current Anglicization of Witterecht to Whitright. (Johan) Peter Whitright, Jr. was a pioneer of central and western Ohio and eventually went to Iowa. Peter’s children settled across Ohio, perhaps influenced by the places they had lived in as a family:

His two daughters, Mary and Katie, married William and David Sprinkle respectively, but I know little about their families to date, save limited information courtesy of Kristy Edenfield.

David moved to Lake County, east of Cleveland on Lake Erie; his son John stayed there, while his other son Allen moved to nearby Geauga County, where descendants still live today in Chardon.

John spent about 20 years in Henry County in the northwestern quadrant of Ohio. About 1865 he moved his family to Barry County in southwest Michigan and lived there until his death. Most of his children and their families lived there too.

Adam raised his family in Ashland County. Several of his children stayed in Ashland County to raise their families; Adam Jr. moved to Medina County and raised his family there, and two other sons moved with their wives (who were sisters) to Eaton County in south central Michigan.

Samuel W. worked across the state of Ohio, starting in Richland County and eventually ending up in Monroe Township in Allen County, Indiana, where he apparently died.

I do not have any actual information on the Whitright or Witterecht family on this page. I do not believe in anyone having access to and selling for profit information I and many others have spent time compiling. If you have a specific question, please feel free to contact me.

If you are looking for a Whitright but don't know their address, I have a sizable address database I have compiled for my own interest. If I have an address for the individual for whom you are looking, I will contact them and tell them how to contact you, so they may keep their privacy. Most of the addresses I have are public record, but I will not be held responsible for giving out any address to anyone.

Please email or snail-mail me with your praises, condemnations, helpful hints, questions, etc. and I will do my best to answer them!

I am also looking for MI Hivelys (and I've found them, 10/1999!), PA or OH Schreibers, OH Facklers, Hoys, and Eicholtzes, MT Lameys and Ryans, MD Sellmans, and IN Harklesses and Claytons. Please contact me if you have any info that can lead me to these families in these specific geograph
