| We are of the Wickendens who left Cowden to become prosperous merchants and manufacturers and restauranteurs. Our first record of them is as Mercers, butchers and owners of a large brick factory in Lymington, Hampshire in the late 1600s. They became prosperous and thrived. After a family upheaval they left for Taunton, Somerset in the early 1830s to start again, this time as cooks, confectioners and restauranteurs. They again proved their entrepreneurial spirit and had very successful businesses in Taunton, Wells, Weston Super-Mare and Celevedon. Some of the family moved to London, some left for Australia, some for the USA, and, our particular ancestor (William Henry), left in 1891 from Wells for Canada. Most of his children eventually continued to the USA, however, the largest number of his descendents are in Canada residing mostly in Ontario still. We are still trying to trace all the descendents of William Henry (1850-1926) and Elizabeth (1855-1932). Any information will be greatly appreciated. Please contact Gord Wickenden. In particular we are looking for the descendents of Beatrice, Cecelia, Edith and Louise. Special thanks to Shelby Bale who did the first research on our branch and to whom we owe a great deal. Thanks also to Bob Pendleton and Brenda Marns and all on the Wickenden List at Roots Web. |
