SOUFFLENHEIM 1701 CAPITATION TAX

The 1701 Town Accounts list 117 people who paid a tax called Capitation (on each head), initiated for the first time in 1695. It is the oldest surviving list of civil taxpayers. This is not a complete list of Soufflenheim residents. These individuals, with the possible exception of the servants and valets, are presumably heads of household. Money is listed in livres (L) and sols (s). Twenty sols equal one livre. Translated by Marie Odile Peres.

BAILIFF RESORT OF HAGUENAU

List made by me, Felix Le Pelletier, chevalier Seigneur de la Houssaye, counselor of the King, Master of Requests in his Hotel, Administrator of justice, police and financial questions in the province of Alsace, of the amounts to be paid in the money of France following the declaration of the King passed on the 12th of March 1701, that will have to be raised on the residents of Soufflenheim, district of Haguenau, for their head money in the present year, and by their servants which in this case they will take back on their wages, in sols and pounds for these sums to be accepted by the bailiff for the named bailiff resort and by the general tax raiser in amount of four denier each livre for each to be paid on two terms, the first being in the month of March to come, and next September from the hands of the collector of the community, who will give them in the hands of the bailiff and from him remitted to the general tax raiser of the bailiff resort in Landau, as follows :
