THE PAUL KIEFFER FAMILY

In addition to the family of Hans Kieffer, the principle Kieffer family in Soufflenheim, there was another Kieffer family, much smaller, that is mentioned in various Soufflenheim records from 1679 until 1757.  It is the family of Paul Kieffer. His relationship to Hans Kieffer, if any, is unknown. Paul and his likely descendants are:

1.    Paul Kieffer & Unknown Wives

          2. Catherine Kieffer & Unknown Husband

          2. Barbara Kieffer & George Metteweeg

                     3.Othilia Metteweeg & Joseph Hasser

4. Margaretha Hasser

                     3. Anton Metteweeg & Unknown Wife

          2. Hans Martin Kieffer & Unknown Wife

                     3. Hans Martin Kieffer's Son Jacob & Unknown Wife

The following information is my best guess. There are other possibilities:

FIRST GENERATION

Paul Kieffer And Unknown Wives

Paul Kieffer                        Abt. 1626?-1681

Unknown First Wife            Abt. 1631?- Died Before 1681?

Unknown Second Wife?     Abt. 1651?- Died after 1711?

SECOND GENERATION

Likely Children of Paul Kieffer

Catherine Kieffer                Born? - Died Before 1724

Barbara Kieffer                  Born? - 1724

Hans Martin Kieffer            Born? - Died After 1701

THIRD GENERATION

The Children Of Catherine Kieffer And Unknown Husband

Not Known

The Children Of Barbara Kieffer And Hans George Metteweg

Othilia Metteweg                Born? - Died After 1724 (Married to Joseph Hasser)

Anthony Metteweg             Born Abt. 1705? - Died After 1724

The Children Of Hans Martin Kieffer And Unknown Wife

Jacob                      Born? - Died After 1756?

FOURTH GENERATION

Children of Othilia Metteweg and Joseph Hasser

          Margaretha                        Born 1725 - Died after 1836

Children Of Anton Metteweg and Unknown Wife (may not have been married)

Not Known

Children of Hans Martin Kieffer's Son Jacob and Unknown Wife (may not have been married)

PAUL KIEFFER

The name Paul Kieffer is first mentioned in the land record of a 1679 inventory. Paul paid the religious tax in 1680. He died between 1681-1682. Paul paid more in religious taxes in 1680 than most other people, so he was better established than most and thus probably older than 40, perhaps much older. It is likely that Paul was married at least twice. His widow is mentioned in various inventory land records as "Paul Kieffer's widow" (never by name) as late as 1711, so she was probably still alive at this time. As Paul's wife appears to have lived 30 or more years longer than him she must have been much younger than Paul, and probably a second or even third wife. Inventory land records refer to the "Heirs of Paul Kieffer" and Paul Kieffer's Widow", so he probably had children.

It seems likely that Catherine Kieffer (d. before 1724), Barbara Kieffer (d. 1724) and Hans Martin Kieffer (d. after 1701), were the children of Paul Kieffer. No genealogical records have been found connecting Paul to any of these individuals. However, at least four pieces of land have been identified that appear to have been owned by both Paul and Barbara.

No records been found connecting Catherine, Barbara and Hans Martin Kieffer other then one piece of land owned by Barbara that shares a border with Catherine, and one piece of land owned by Barbara that shares a border with Hans Martin Kieffer's son Jacob. However, the fact that there was an established person named Paul Kieffer living in Soufflenheim in 1680 makes it very likely that Catherine, Barbara and Hans Martin were his children. There are no other Kieffer's in Soufflenheim that could have been their parents. It is also possible that Catherine Kieffer was Paul's wife.

If Paul died at the age of 55 in 1681 then he was born in 1626. If he married at the age of 25 then he was married in 1651. This scenario makes it very possible he was the brother of Hans Kieffer, who is estimated to have been born around 1612. Perhaps Barbara’s daughter Otilia was named after Barbara's aunt Odile Kan. Since both Hans Kieffer and Paul Kieffer had a daughter named Barbara, perhaps the mother of Hans and Paul was named Barbara. It is also possible that Paul is the cousin or nephew of Hans. Due to the small population of Soufflenheim in the late 1600's, a less likely scenario is that Paul is not in any way related to the family of Hans Kieffer.

Other than the original Paul and Hans Martin Kiefer, no Kieffer's have been found named Paul, Paula, Martin or Martina. The marriage records from 1743 to 1754 do not list anyone who had a parent named Martin, Barbara, Catherine or Jacob Kieffer other than Kieffer's who have already been identified as belonging to the Hans Kieffer line. Nor are there any baptism records listing these names other than Kieffer's who have already been identified as belonging to the Hans Kieffer line. The only possibility seems to be Hans Martin Kieffer's son Jacob but no wife or children of his have been identified. So it appears this branch of the Kieffer family did not continue.

·     UNKNOWN WIFE OF PAUL KIEFFER

It is very likely that Paul was married at least twice. It is also possible that Catherine Kieffer was Paul's wife. There is no person listed as "Paul Kieffer's Widow" in the 1701 Capitation Tax records, so perhaps she had married again by this time, or passed away.

·     CATHERINE KIEFFER

(Possible Daughter Of Paul Kieffer and Unknown Wife)

Speculate: Born about 1660. Married about 1680 (age 20). Died about 1720 (before 1724) (about age 60). There are only two references to Catherina Kieffer. The first is in the 1724 inventory of her presumed sister Barbara Kieffer. Barbara’s children inherit land that border on the “second side Catharina Kieffer's heirs”. The second reference is in the land records of a 1729 inventory that says “the other side Catharina Kieffer”. As Barbara and Catherina Kieffer have adjacent land in 1724, their presumed father Paul Kieffer may have divided one piece of land into two sections and gave one to each. It’s also possible the land belonged to Metteweeg and there is no connection. She may also be the wife of Paul Kieffer.

So Catherine died before 1724 and her heirs were likely her children. The land records in Barbara's 1724 inventory do not refer to a page, so Barbara Kieffer's children may have told the person compiling the inventory that the land belonged to their mother's deceased sister, Catherina Kieffer. (This seems to have been the case in the 1751 inventory of Hans George Kieffer when land was referred to as belonging to Gertrude Kieffer, Hans George's sister who died in 1709. I can’t imagine land records not being updated for 42 years, so they must have occasionally taken some shortcuts.) The Catherine Kieffer mentioned in 1729 is probably the same person. As there are no marriage records between 1743 and 1754 with a bride or groom listed as the child of “deceased” Catherine Kieffer, her children, if any (or if any survived to become adults), must have been married before 1743 and thus born before 1724. Catherine died before Barbara, so she was probably older than her. There is a small possibility she is the daughter of Hans Martin Kieffer. It is also possible she is the wife of Paul Kieffer.

[This land was owned by Paul Kieffer, then by his widow in 1711, then by Catherine Kieffer's heirs in 1724. If Catharine was married to Paul Kieffer, why does she have the same last name? Did Paul marry a cousin or was Catharine his daughter and not his wife?]

SECTION HUNGERVELDT, DISTRICT NAMED AUFF DIE SULTZMATT, NEBEN DEM REIFFENSTEIN:

·     BARBARA KIEFFER

(Likely Daughter Of Paul Kieffer and Unknown Wife)

SPECULATE: Born about 1665. Married about 1685 (age 20). Died in 1724 (age 59). At the time of her death she had one daughter who was married and a son who was not yet “major of years” (age 25). Indications that the son was fairly old (perhaps even in his 20's) is the fact that no references are made about someone agreeing to teach him a trade, send him to school, or raise him as a good Christian. As a guardian was appointed for him, he was under 25 years of age. Assuming Barbara's married daughter Otilia was 35 years old in 1724  she would have been born in 1689. Assuming Barbara was married three years before the birth of Otilia (her oldest surviving child) and you get a marriage date of 1686. Assuming Barbara was married at age 20 and you get a birth date of 1666.  She would have been 58 years old at death.
