SOUFFLENHEIM INVENTORY DOCUMENTS: 1725-1792

The following inventory records have been completely translated by Marie Odile Peres. Note that names are often spelled differently from document to document. Spelling was not as standardized in earlier times. It's also possible that some of the original documents have deteriorated, thus affecting translation. Some names are undoubtedly spelled incorrectly as a result of human error by the original notaries, in translation, or typographical mistakes.

Follows now the inventory and division of property starting with:

HOUSE

One house with yard, barn, in the village of Soufflenheim, one side near Philipps Kieffer, and for a part Adam Maÿ, second side near Johann Jacob Schäffter, up on the road to Haguenau, down on Jacob Schäfter, in all property

This house and dependences has been sold by the widow and all heirs to Lorentz Sensenbrenner, son in law, for 100 G which is part of what is to divide, and takes consideration of what he has paid to Peter Bordal some time ago to acquire his own house in Soufflenheim. One side near the common street, second side near Catharina Anger, up on the Mill street, down on the common property. Pays each year to the church here : 1/2 pound as tax, besides this in all property, which house has been estimated to : 400 G by Joseph Daul, son in law, and the other heirs present to this, who will buy the named house from Lorentz Sensenbrenner.

Which amount will be paid to all of them

he will so pay to the widow : 33 g  3 s 4 d

And to the other heirs: 11 g 1 s 1 1/2 d

On this other house estimated 400, Joseph Daul will pay to the widow for her third share: 133 g    3 s 4 d

And to each of the other children the rest or 266 g 6 s 8 d or each of the 6 : 44 g 4 s 1 1/2 d

For the payment of the part of the widow, so 133 g 3 s 4 d, he will find accommodation with the widow concerning the terms of payment.

Another house, yard, barn and garden this side of the bridge, in the village of Soufflenheim. One side near the following garden, second side near Andres Müller, in front the common street, behind the same, in all property.

This house has been estimated by all to: 325 g

This same house has been paid during the marriage time for a half of: 157 g 5 s

So the mother will receive her third part on it or: 52 g 5 s

And each of the children will receive their share of 262 g 5 s or each of them his sixth part of 43 g 7 s 6 1/2 d

Same. One garden. One side near the common property, second side near the house described above, in front and behind the common property, in all property

Maria gives to each of his brothers and sisters : 13 g 3 s 4 d for it

It has been estimated: 80 g

Has to be deduced what is due as capital to the Holy congregation : 10 g

So that the total amount is reduced in consequence to : 315 g

NOTE: The heirs asked that Lorentz Sensenbrenner and Hans Georg Metzler would both as sons in law pay for having lived into the houses a sum to the heirs as interest on years spent there, however as both houses as seen above have been estimated rather high, it has been decided that they will not finally ask this from them.

·      THOMAS KIEFFER

16 May 1729  Roeschwoog 6E33 #59

SOUFFLENHEIM 1729

Inheritance records and description of all property left at time of death by : THOMAS KIEFFER in his lifetime a burgher in Soufflenheim, who died about 9 weeks ago, and left behind him claiming his inheritance : first MARIA ANNA SCHIEDT, widow, assisted by ANTON SCHIEDT burgher of this place and her brother, then : 2nd) LORENTZ KIEFFER aged 18 years ; 3rd ANTON KIEFFER aged 14 years ; THOMAS KIEFFER aged 12 years, in their name compares Michel Kieffer burgher of this place their sworn guardian, so the widow and the three children named ; and also after a specific oath was passed and in presence of : Jacob Schaeffer, mayor ; Hans Georg Fridtmann, and Michel Kehlhoffer, both justice counselors here, and in his name (mark of omission) repeated above for Lorentz Kieffer : Philipp Kieffer, burgher and guardian. [So Michel Kieffer guardian for Anton and Thomas, Philipp Kieffer guardian for Lorentz Kieffer]

All this passed in front of the king’s notary Johann Paul Wolff of the district of Haguenau ; written in Soufflenheim, on the 16th May 1729.

Now follows the description and sharing of the property and starting with :

THE HOUSE

One house, barn, dependences, garden in Soufflenheim. One side is the Mühlbach the other side near the field named Stiederhoff, in front the road, and behind Jacob Hörtel’s heirs. Pays each year 5 Gulden to the Maitrise. This farm described, and containing also an oil mill, belongs to the widow Maria Anna Schiedt, as she brought it into the union. During this union it has been bettered with construction of a house and barn on it, and now is estimated at 400 Gulden, and so left at this amount to the mother and widow, in charge of paying to the royal maitrise 5 Gulden each year, but an amount of 100 Gulden have been decided to be withdrawn of the estimate, and so left 300 Gulden. Then the various farming tools,  barrels and vans, horses and pigs left also to the widow and estimated 126 Gulden 6 schillings.

So a total for house and content of : 426 Gulden 6 s

On this are withdrawn the debts left to the widow to pay for so: 119 Gulden 3 s

After compensation remains to be shared : 307 Gulden 3 s

So the widow is allowed on this for her third: 102 Gulden 4 s 4 d

And to the three children in common: 204 G 8 s 8 d

And to each of them : 68 G 2 s 10 d

Concerning the terms of payment, it has been decided that the son by first marriage, Lorentz, will receive his portion, so one half, on St. Martin’s day in year 1731, the others their heirs their half on St Martin’s day in year 1732 without interests, however if these days pass and that no payment has been made the usual interest should be asked for according to the land’s usage. Concerning the share of the two youngest sons, Anton and Thomas, it has been agreed that the mother will give each their portion when they reach the 18 years with the usual interest. And a barrel is left to Lorentz estimated 6 s.
