Schultheiss
is generally translated as mayor. The Schultheiss, appointed by the local
overlord, was the senior political official and the man responsible for
representing the population to the overlord.
The
Heimburger and Burgermeister were another type of mayor with a slightly
different scope of office and responsibilities. They were elected by the
burghers (legal citizens) of the village and served a one year term. Any
burgher, whatever their profession, could be mayor.
The
Justice Council supported the mayor in the justice court of the village, which
handled minor crimes (misdemeanors). During inheritance proceedings they
attended the meeting of the beneficiaries, mayor, and notary, observed the
division of assets and liabilities, and signed the inventory agreement as a
witness. They often assisted in the valuation of assets. According to Soufflenheim un cite, Soufflenheim had 4
to 6 assistant magistrates (Justice Counselors) in the Justice Council.

their information in the Town Accounts. In the inventory records, Anton Kieffer is listed as mayor from
1764-1784 and his son Michael Kieffer is listed as mayor from 1785-1789.

records who describe themselves as Mayor or Public Officer - often both.
Individuals

Burgermeisters. The position of Schultheiss (Provost) - head mayor appointed by
the royal overlords, was abolished in 1789 at the beginning of the French
