There is another JOSEPH KIEFFER OF SOUFFLENHEIM AND EAST EDEN. He is the Cousin of Anthony and Joseph Kieffer. He came with his family to East Eden in 1834. The following information is what I know about him as of 3/1/02:

Death record of Joseph Kieffer, farmer, aged 45 years, husband of Richarda Wagner, son of deceased Anton Kieffer farmer of Soufflenheim in his life and of deceased Maria Anna Mosser. As declared by Joseph Kieffer junior, farmer here and brother in law, and by Anton Kieffer, farmer in Soufflenheim, as brother of the deceased. [Anthony Kieffer had a brother named Joseph and they had a sister named Maria Anna who married a man named Joseph Wagner in 1797. He might have been their brother-in-law.

Inventory of property left after his death by : JOSEPH KIEFFER farmer in Souffllenheim, whose wife and widow is RICHARDE WAGNER.

The guardian is Antoine Kieffer, farmer of this place ; in presence of Pareth, notary.
A marriage contract has been passed the 5th February in year 1786 in Fort Louis between : JOSEPH KIEFFER, son of ANTOINE KIEFFER burgher and farmer and of the deceased MARIE ANNE MOSSER ; and : RICHARDIS WAGNER daughter of LORENTZ WAGNER burgher and farmer and of MARGARETHA HOFFMANN.
The father of the young man gives a half of his house in Soufflenheim : one side Heinrich Simon, the other side Jean Hummel, upper side is Michel Schaeffter and Antoine Schlosser for part ; the value of the house to be compensated between the brothers of the new married up to : 600 Gulden, so 50 Gulden each St. Martin's day ; also two oxen are given value : 260 Gulden.
The father of the bride gives : 200 gulden.
Witnesses are Antoine Kieffer, Lorentz Wagner, Johannes Mocker, Johannes Kieffer and a second Antoine Kieffer.

Francois Joseph Kieffer was born on June 27, 1786 in Soufflenheim His parents were Joseph Kieffer, farmer, and Richarde Wagner. Joseph and Richarde were married about 1785. They had at least two other children besides Joseph (their oldest child): Richarde, born in 1789, and Catherine, born in 1792.
Joseph Kieffer married Madelaine (Magdalena) Schoeffter on April 7, 1809. Madelaine Schoeffter was the daughter of Ignace Schoeffter (Schaeffer?) and Catherine Eck. Joseph was a farmer when he lived in Soufflenheim. In Soufflenheim he lived in houses numbered in the 90's.

They had the following children, all born in Soufflenheim (He probably had other children, as his emigration records list 8 children, these are the only children I have identified so far):

The godparents of Anthony Kieffer's daughter Phillipina on May 30, 1834 were Adam and Magdalena Schoepfter. What is the connection, if any, with Joseph Kieffers wife Madeleine (Magdalena) Schoeffter. Are they the same person? Is Adam related to Madeleine?

JOSEPH KIEFER 70 Father in Law. Germany. Widowed. Twenty one years in Eden. Cooper. Naturalized. Does not own land. Theresa Harter is his daughter. He would have arrived in Eden in 1834, the same year his name first appears on the Eden tax records.

1855 NEW YORK STATE CENSUS: Joseph Kieffer, retired and living with his daughter Theresa and her husband, is listed as a cooper (not as a farmer as in two previous census). The 1834 and 1837 Eden land tax records show him owning 49 acres. Joseph probably lived in East Eden from 1834 until the late 1850's. In the 1855 census Joseph Sr. says he has been in Eden for 21 years (1834). He is not listed in the 1860 Eden census.

Jan Wojcik says that Joseph Kieffer and Magdalena Schaefter had a son named Simon Kieffer who married Elizabetha Roos, daughter of Simon Roos (presumably in New York) Her email address is: jrwojcik13@aol.com
