DEATH RECORD OF JOSEPH KIEFFER (Mark Drexler Research: September, 2006) Died: 12 January 1841 Age: 55 (cinquante cinq ans) Occupation: potter Widower (veuf) of Barbe Burger Parents: Joseph Kieffer, (no age given), potter, and Catherine Aehringer [Noel] Declarants: Ludan Friedmann, 26; laborer; son-in-law (gendre) of the deceased Joseph Vetter, 50, cabaretier; brother-in-law (beau frere) of deceased Recording Official: Joseph Messner
Mark Drexler Research: September, 2006 These records [death records of Joseph and Elisabeth Kieffer] establish that Elisabeth Kieffer and Joseph Kieffer were siblings. The witnesses and their relationships are the key here. Ludan Friedmann was Elisabeth's nephew by marriage, of course...Ludan's wife was Elisabeth's niece. Joseph Vetter as Joseph's brother-in-law really nails it. But what about their mother's name? In the above records it was not consistently spelled, but the first letter of the name appears to be an "A". It is certainly not a "B" or an "R" as seen by Rosa. It is a simple, tall, peaked stroke with a curlique at each end and without a crossbar. I scoured many records written by Joseph Messner around this time period for any character that looked like this...and the only candidate is one of his 3 or 4 styles of capital A. The character in question seems nearly identical to the first letter in Antoine, Andre, and Ambos. In each of the above records, the odd name was written fairly clearly, such that the spelling does not look ambiguous in any way. That odd name is simply incorrect, in my estimation...and in your's, too, I'd bet...and I think we should blame Ludan Friedmann for perpetuating it. He was the common factor in both records. But I can excuse him for this...I hope nobody expects me to know and remember my father-in-law's mother's maiden name! I read the 18 November 1809 record of Joseph's marriage (to Barbe Burger)...and found his mother's name to be NOEL (and she was present at the wedding). You have the corresponding marriage contract (4 Nov 1809) and it agrees with the marriage record. The marriage record gave Joseph's father Joseph's death date of 15 April 1806, and I also verified that record...which included the name NOEL. I checked two baptism records of this elder Joseph's children, and they were clear on the NOEL. The 10 April 1821 death record for Catharina Noel, "epouse" of Joseph Kieffer, established that she was from Seltz...which might have made it easy for Soufflenheimers to forget her name. I have found no indication of a marriage record for Elisabeth, but I think the point is made sufficiently by what we do have. By the way, I do agree with the reading of her husband's name as "Vetter"...from both his signature and Messner's writings.
Children of Joseph Kieffer and Catherine Noel are:
