I am researching the Wieand family name. My research is centered on Johan Wendel Wiand and his brother Johan Jost Wiegandt. Johan Wendel and Johan Jost came to Pennsylvania from Freinsheim, Germany. Their father was Jacob Wygandt (1679-1719). Johan Wendel (1709-1787) came to Philadelphia in 1729 and settled in New Goshenhoppen, Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County, PA. His brother Johan Jost (1717-1761/1768) came to the same area in 1750.
There are various spellings of the Wieand name. They include: Weand, Weant, Wehunt, Weiand, Weyand, Weyant, Wiand, Wiant, Wieand, Wiegand, Wiegandt, Wyand, Wyandt, Wyant, Wiandt.
I am originally from Lehigh County, PA where my branch of the family settled. I am a descendant of Johan Jost who had about 10 children. His wife was Anna Maria Barbara Schaffner of Schefer. One son Johan Jost, Jr. settled in Macungie Township, Lehigh County, PA. Johan Jost, Jr. had 14 children. Johan Jost, Jr. had a son Jacob who had 5 children. Jacob had a son Carl who had 5 children. Carl had a son Lewis H. who had 4 children. Lewis H. had a son Charles Andrew who had 4 children. Charles Andrew had a son Herbert Stanley who had 3 children. I am a son of Herbert Stanley. I have 2 children and 4 grandchildren. Soon there will be a fifth grandchild.
There are various branches of the Wieand family around the country. Johan Jost had a son Jacob whose family settled in Somerset County, PA. Johan Jost had another son George Peter whose family settled in Clarion County, PA. Johan Jost Jr. had a son Peter who settled in Luzerne County, PA. Johan Jost Jr. had a son John (Weant) whose family settled in Carroll County, Maryland.
Johan Wendell's family settled in Montgomery, Lehigh and Bucks Counties, PA. Wieand families are in the following PA counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Berks, Bucks, Clarion, Lancaster, Lawrence, Lebanon, Lehigh, Luzerne, Mckean, Mercer, Mifflin, Montgomery, Northampton, Northumberland, Schuykill, Snyder, Somerset, Westmoreland, and Wyoming.
One branch of Johan Wendell's family settled in Jefferson County, Ohio. This family has settled in the following Ohio counties: Carroll, Coshocton, Hancock, Harrison, Huron, Jackson, Jefferson, Tuscarawas and Woods. A daughter and her husband, Andrew Holzhauser moved to Rowan County, North Carolina.
There are branches of the Wieand Family in Indiana, Kansas and Missouri.
I am also interested in research on Freinsheim, Germany. I have found that several other families have come from Freinsheim to the USA. They are the Ante, Bitting and Fisher families. At some point I would like to research the Wieand family in Germany as some of Jacob Wygandt's sons stayed in Freinsheim, Germany.
Another Wieand Family came over from Freinshiem, two sons whose father was either a brother or cousin of Jacob Wygandt came over to PA. Johann George Wiegandt came over in 1740 (spelled name as Jurg Viant). His half brother Elias Wieand came over in 1779. Their father was a Rathsherr Jost Wiegandt. I do not have much information on this family.
I am also researching my grandparents families Gildner and Moser. The Gildner Family is from Lehigh County near Allentown, PA and the Moser Family is from Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, PA. My great grandfather is Eli Gildner. His daughter Amelia married my grandfather Charles Andrew Wieand. My mother's family is as follows: My grandfather was Vernon D. Moser (1892-1980) and his father was Orsen H. Moser (1868-1929). Orsen H. was the son of Jacob (1849-1913). My Grandmother was Mabel Shortz.
My goal is to gather as much information as possible on the above Wieand family both Johan Wendel and Johan Jost. I want to be able to exchange information with those researching the same lines of the Wieand family. But I am interested in other Wieand families. If you have any questions or can fill some gaps, please E-mail me.
