The Wiegands of SchenklengsfeldUpdated April 28, 2002 | |
| In the summer of 1840 Johannes and Anna Maria (SCHNEIDER) WIEGAND sailed from Bremen with their first two children, Heinrich and Anna Maria, on the Dorothea Louise and arrived in Baltimore, MD in early August. They listed their home as Schenklengsfeld, Hessen-Cassel and their occupation as weavers. They proceeded immediately to Troy, Madison Co. Illinois and bought a farm where my gr-grandfather Peter was born. Peter later served in the Civil war and wrote a sort of diary of his experiences that is found on my Ancestry page. The family had moved to a farm near Fosterberg, Madison Co. Illinois by the time the war broke out. After being mustered out of the Illinois 97th in 1864, Peter married Louisa Paul and entered into business in Alton, Madison Co. Illinois with his brother-in-law, C. C. Paul. A few years later, Peter sold out his interest in the general store and returned to farming. He purchased a farm just south of Bunker Hill, Macoupin Co. Illinois and raised his family there. I am researching the following families and would be happy to share information with others interested in them: WIEGAND, PAUL, SCHNEIDER, BRUEGGEMANN, SCHELDT, BAAB, SCHAEFER, HOEHN, BRUNER, and BRUNS. |
