Served in Revolutionary War in Virginia (Mrs. Howard H. McCall's "Roster of Rev. Soldiers in Ga"). Moved to Georgia with his parents. Became a well-to-do farmer and slave owner. A "kind master, a devoted husband and father, ...gentle and refined in his manners, quiet and dignified," according to family chronicle"; with "fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and a Roman nose." His wife Catherine recorded as having been "a handsome woman, very energetic, and a superior housekeeper." Seven children in all.
